Alumni Men's Basketball Game Set for Saturday

May 16, 2017

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – For the third year in a row, a group of Western Washington University men’s basketball alumni will face the Bellingham Slam in an exhibition contest this Saturday as part of the university’s annual Back 2 Bellingham alumni weekend.

The event, dubbed the Back 2 Bellingham Battle, is set for 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 20 at WWU’s Wade King Recreation Center. The game will pit the Slam against a squad comprised of former Viking standouts from the past decade. With several players on the Slam being Western graduates themselves, this is sure to be a fun and unique event.

In last year’s exhibition, the Slam defeated the Vikings Alumni 133-106 with guard Morris Anderson and forward Tyler Amaya combining to score 46 points for the Slam. Former All-American Grant Dykstra, who will be inducted into WWU’s Athletic Hall of Fame next month, scored 21 points for the Alumni.

The WWU alumni side is expected to feature a mixture of senior players who completed their eligibility this past spring, along with former standouts who suited up for the Vikings over the years. The first two Back 2 Bellingham Battles have included appearances from former Vikings Ricardo Maxwell, Anye Turner and Preston Vermeulen, among others. Graduating senior and WWU all-time leading scorer Jeffrey Parker is expected to play in the game as well.

Following the game, WWU men’s basketball alumni and friends of the program are invited to attend the Men’s Basketball Hall of Fame Celebration at Buffalo Wild Wings at Bellis Fair Mall starting at 7:30 pm. Cost is $20 per person which includes appetizers and beer (21 and over).

Seating is limited for the Back 2 Bellingham Battle and is expected to sell out. Courtside tickets are available for $10 while general admission seats cost $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students. Children ages 12 and under are free. Advance tickets may be purchased online at www.bellinghamslam.com or by calling (360) 734-SLAM.

The game will also be broadcast by the voices of Viking basketball, Doug Lange and Mark Scholten, on KBAI 930 AM/98.9 FM.
