Greg Meier named WWU's top assistant coach
Aug. 29, 2012
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Greg Meier, a former Viking player who assisted two seasons at Eastern Arizona College, has been named the interim top assistant men's basketball coach at Western Washington University.
"We are very excited about Greg coming back to Western," said Tony Dominguez, who was named interim head coach two weeks ago after Brad Jackson left to take an assistant position at the University of Washington. "He has a good basketball IQ and works at building strong relationships with players. He is a tireless worker who strives for excellence."
"I'm sure that he will quickly bond with our team, staff and community and have a positive influence as he understands and has been a part of WWU basketball."
At Eastern Arizona, a National Junior College Athletic Association Division I school, Meier helped the Gila Monsters reach the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference playoffs and post the NJCAA's top team grade point average in 2008-09.
Last season, Meier was an assistant at Glacier Peak High School in Snohomish, helping the Grizzlies reach the Class 3A state tournament.
"Coach Meier has good recruiting ties," Dominguez said. "His interpersonal skills allow him to build strong relationships quickly and he is outstanding at character building, qualities we have always wanted to exemplify here at WWU."
The 27-year-old Meier received his bachelor's degree in communications from WWU in 2008. He lettered two seasons for Vikings after transferring from Whatcom Community College.
Meier was a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges academic all-star at WCC, the Orcas reaching the post-season playoffs. He played the previous season at Skagit Valley Community College on a team that got to the NWAACC playoffs. Meier also attended Lewis-Clark State College (Lewiston, ID), competing on the men's golf team.
A graduate of Chelan High School, Meier was a second-team all-Central Washington Athletic Conference choice as a senior for the Mountain Goats. As a junior, he played on a team that won the league title and reached the championship game of the Class 2A state tournament.
Meier was a first-team all-conference pick in golf as a senior, making two trips to the state tournament.
