Vikings Men's Hoops Selected for National ESPN3 Game

Oct. 5, 2017

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University men’s basketball game at Central Washington on Feb. 1, 2018 has been selected to be part of the NCAA Division II Basketball Showcase.
The game vs. the Wildcats will reach a national audience with the 7:30 pm game streaming live on ESPN3. The CWU and Seattle Pacific women’s game that will tip at 5:15 pm will also be part of the DII Basketball Showcase.
The rivalry between Central Washington and Western Washington is a matchup that has aired on regional or national television annually for the last few years. The Vikings are the defending GNAC champions, finishing 2016-17 with a 25-6 overall record and a 17-3 conference mark. Western Washington advanced to the NCAA West Regional and returns eight players and four starters from last year’s squad.
WWU has won four of the last five meetings, and 15 of the last 19 vs. the Wildcats. The Vikings swept the Wildcats last season, winning 100-89 in Bellingham and 85-72 in a regionally-televised game on ROOT SPORTS at Ellensburg.
“We are excited and grateful for the opportunity to play a game on ESPN3 and the national stage,” said sixth-year head coach Tony Dominguez. “As a program we are constantly striving to grow and to improve and we view this as another moment where it allows us to grow and compete in front of a national audience.”
WWU and CWU will also square off in GNAC play on Jan. 6, 2018 at 7 pm on WECU Court at Carver Gym. Additional TV games are still in the works and are still to be announced for the 2017-18 season.
A total of 14 of the 24 basketball-sponsoring conferences in Division II are featured in this year’s Division II Basketball Showcase. An additional four flex doubleheaders in February and March will be announced at a later date. The showcase starts on Sat., Nov. 18, with Humboldt State hosting Chico State.

This marks the second time in the last two years that WWU has been selected for a NCAA Division II Showcase, with the eventual national champion women’s soccer team hosting Bridgeport at Harrington Field on ESPN3 on Sept. 22, 2016.
