Western's Duty named MVP of 2009 Disney Tip-Off Classic

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University men's basketball forward Michael Duty (Sr., Seattle/O'Dea) was named Most Valuable Player of the 2009 Disney Tip-Off Classic held on Friday through Sunday at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Duty was one of two Vikings selected to the five-man all-tournament team. Also picked was guard Derrick Webb (Sr., Port Orchard/South Kitsap).

Duty averaged a tourney-best 14.3 points and tied for second in rebounds with a 6.3 average in helping Western to victories in two of its three games. He shot 48.6 percent (18-of-37) from the field.

Webb was third in scoring with an 11.7 average and led in free-throw shooting at 94.7 percent (18-of-19). He scored a game-high 23 points in the Vikings' 94-70 season-opening win Friday over Grand Canyon AZ.

Western center Zach Bruce (Sr., Oceanside, CA) was the tourney leader in rebounds with an 8.0 average as was point guard Morris Anderson (Sr., Federal Way) in assists at 5.0 and steals at 3.0.

The Vikings lost 71-58 to Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday, but bounced back to defeat San Francisco State, 71-52, on Sunday behind the career-high 19 points of guard Cameron Severson (Jr., Petersburg, AK).
