For the second straight week, the Western Washington University men's basketball team faces a NCAA Division I foe, meeting Oregon State University on Sunday (2 p.m.) in an exhibition game at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore.
The Vikings lost 97-67 at Fresno State on Nov. 4 after leading 45-36 at halftime.
Western was led by 6-foot-10 center Steve Severin (So., Richland/Hanford), who had 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Guard Ira Graham (Jr., Fontana, Calif.) also scored 16 points for the Vikings and guard Derrick Webb (Jr., Port Orchard/South Kitsap), a transfer from Highline CC, came off the bench to add 10.
Oregon State is coming off a 78-55 exhibition win over NAIA Division II Warner Pacific.
Leading the Beavers is the sophomore brother guard combination of 6-3 Josh Tarver and 6-5 Seth Tarver. They accounted for 25 points against Warner Pacific, with Seth having 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, and Josh, who started every game as a freshman at OSU, scoring 14 points.
Also expected to start for Oregon State, which was 11-21 last year and 3-15 in PAC-10 play, are 6-2 guard Rickey Claitt, a junior college transfer; 6-9 freshman forward Sean Carter and 6-11 sophomore center Roeland Schaftenaar, an import from The Netherlands.
Carter had 14 points against Warner Pacific, and redshirt freshman Lathen Wallace contributed 15 points off the bench.
Severin and Graham, both starters last season, will be in Western's starting. Rounding out the lineup are returnee 6-7 Calin Schell (Jr., Cheland) and a pair of junior college transfers from Bakersfield College - 6-1 junior point guard Andrew Ready (Chicago, IL/Westinghouse) and 6-5 junior forward Steve Alford (Bakersfield, CA/South).
