WHAT'S HAPPENING...the defending GNAC regular-season and conference tournament champion WWU men's basketball team opens the 2017-18 season this weekend with the GNAC/PacWest Conference Challenge at Carver Gym in Bellingham...the No. 22/19 Vikings host PacWest teams Hawai'i-Hilo and Notre Dame de Namur, and GNAC foe Simon Fraser in the two-day, season-opening will be played at 5 and 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday, with WWU playing the later game each day on WECU Court at Carver Gym.

VIKINGS TV...all of WWU's home games will be streamed live online via VikingsTV at with longtime Whatcom County sports broadcaster Doug Lange calling all the action courtside...the webcast will feature a seven-camera shoot in high definition, with video replays, graphic overlays and halftime and post-game interviews.

SALUTING OUR HEROES...for this weekend's Veterans Day tournament, all veterans and current military personnel will receive free admission to the games by showing their military ID.

THE NATIONAL RANKINGS...WWU enters the season ranked nationally in both preseason polls...hold the No. 22 spot in the NABC Division II Preseason Coaches Poll and listed No. 19 in the D2SIDA Preseason Media Poll...finished last season ranked No. 12 in the nation by the NABC...current string of 14 consecutive weeks ranked in the NABC poll, the 9th-longest active streak among Division II teams.

SERIES RECORDS...a look at the series records between WWU and its opponents this week, Notre Dame de Namur and Hawai'i-Hilo:

  • Notre Dame de Namur: WWU leads the all-time series 4-1 over NDNU...won three straight...played the Argonauts in back-to-back seasons in 2013-14 and 2014-15 at Carver Gym, earning a pair of wins.
  • Hawai'i-Hilo: WWU is 4-0 all-time vs. Hawai'i-Hilo, including an 84-73 victory in the last meeting between on Nov. 15, 2014 in Bellingham.

PICKED TO REPEAT...GNAC coaches have selected the Vikings to repeat as league champions in the annual preseason coaches' poll...WWU received 7 of 11 first-place votes, and a total of 116 points, ahead of second-place Western Oregon (108 points).

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS...WWU won the 2016-17 GNAC regular season and tournament titles, clinching the regular-season championship with a 17-3 league mark for the sixth GNAC title for Western, and fourth outright...the Vikings beat host Saint Martin's (91-79) and Western Oregon (71-69) in the GNAC final to claim the first conference tournament title in program history.

HIGH-POWERED VIKINGS...the Vikings are coming off a dominating offensive season in 2016-17, leading the league and ranking 15th in NCAA II averaging 88.1 points per game...also led the conference in field goal percentage (.493), 3-point percentage (.401) and free throw percentage (.783), ranking in the top-25 nationally in all three categories.

PRESEASON ALL-GNAC...WWU led all GNAC schools with three selections to the 2017-18 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason All-Conference Team...Deandre Dickson, Daulton Hommes and Trey Drechsel all earned votes from league coaches to the be listed on the 15-member preseason team...Dickson and Hommes were both unanimous selections after being named All-GNAC Honorable Mention in 2016-17.

CARVER GYM...the Vikings make a return to campus after playing the last two seasons at Whatcom Community College due to a massive renovation to Carver Gym...WWU is 545-160 all-time inside Carver Gym, a .773 winning percentage in the on-campus facility...head coach Tony Dominguez has led the Vikings to a 44-3 (.936) record at Carver Gym, and a 64-10 mark in home games (.865).

2016-17 SEASON IN REVIEW...finished the 2016-17 season 25-6 overall and 17-3 in GNAC play...won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular season and conference tournament championships...made 8th NCAA Division II Tournament appearance as the No. 3 seed in the West Regional in San Diego...returned to the national tournament for the first time since back-to-back Final Four appearances in 2011-12 (National Champions) and 2012-13...tied program record for most wins in GNAC play with the 17-1 season in 2012-13...26 overall wins were the most since back-to-back 31-win seasons in 2011-12 (National Championship Season) and 2012-13 (Final Four)...10th consecutive winning season, the second-longest streak in program history, and advanced to the postseason for the ninth consecutive season...recorded three separate 8-game winning streaks, including 8-0 start to the season...ended season winning 16 of last 19 games.


  • 3-Point Record - WWU has set a program record with 2282 made 3-point field goals last season.
  • Hommes on Target - Daulton Hommes led the GNAC with 47.9% accuracy (46-for-96) from 3-point range last season...overall averaged 12.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

20+ WINS...WWU has recorded 18 seasons with 20 or more wins in program history, including 9 in the last 13 seasons (went 25-6 in 2016-17)...current string of 10 consecutive winning seasons, the 2nd-longest streak in program history (18 straight, 1959-1976)...program has recorded a 277-112 (.714) over last 13 seasons.

PUTTING UP THE POINTS...the Vikings finished last season averaging 88.1 points per game, 15th in NCAA Division II...scored 100+ points in 7 games this season, the most since 9 in 2005-06 (school record is 12 in 2004-05)...scored 100+ points three consecutive vs. NNU (102), CWU (100) and Simon Fraser (100)...marked the first time since the 2005-06 season to record at least three consecutive 100-point games, and the first time to post three straight 100-point games in league play since Feb. 26-March 5, 2005...scoring average finished 7th-best dating back to 1986-87 (record is 92.2 in 1988-89).

COACH D...Tony Dominguez is in his 6th season at the helm of the WWU Men's Basketball program...owns a career record of 112-43 for a .723 winning percentage...coached the Vikings to a 67-27 (.713) record in GNAC play, with a pair of conference regular-season championships (2012-13 & 2016-17)...posted three consecutive 20-win seasons in his first three years as head coach, and led WWU to 15 or more wins in each of his five seasons as head 2012-13, directed Vikings to 31-3 record, GNAC regular-season championship, West Regional title and NCAA Division II final four...winning percentage of 91.2 was school record and win total tied WWU mark...finalist for Clarence "Big House" Gaines National Coach of the Year honors and GNAC co-Coach of the Year...guided Vikings to wins in his first 24 games, an NCAA Division II record...named the 2016-17 GNAC Coach of the Year.

COACHING MILESTONE...head coach Tony Dominguez recorded his 100th victory at Western Oregon on Jan. 14, 2017...he became the quickest head coach in program history to reach 100 wins, recording the milestone win in his 140th game (100-40), bettering Sam Carver (145 games), Brad Jackson (147 games) and Chuck Randall (151 games)...Dominguez was named the 2016-17 GNAC Coach of the Year and has an all-time head coaching record of 112-43 (.723).

LOCAL CONNECTIONS...the 2017-18 Vikings roster features three players from Whatcom County in sophomore forward Daulton Hommes, junior center Logan Schilder and junior guard Leif Anderson...Hommes, a graduate of Lynden Christian High School, Schilder is a product of Bellingham High School and Whatcom Community College and Anderson joins the program after starring at Sehome High School at Whatcom CC.

NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY...WWU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament eight times in program history, returning to the tournament last season as the No. 3 seed in the West Regional...reached the NCAA Division II Elite 8 three times (2000-01, 2011-12, 2012-13) and was crowned the NCAA Division II National Champion in 2011-12.

PROGRAM HISTORY...2017-18 is the 116th season in WWU Men's Basketball history dating back to the first season was in 1903...the program boasts an all-time 1,458-1016 record (.589) are some historical links and notes:
