BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University men's basketball coach Brad Jackson announced today that Dan Young, a 6-foot-10 center at Highline Community College, has signed a national letter of intent to compete for the Vikings beginning the fall of 2010.

Young averaged 8.0 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks last year as a freshman for the Thunderbirds, helping them to a 22-9 record and the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) West Division championship (15-1).

"We are very pleased that Dan has made the decision to attend Western and join the WWU basketball family," said Jackson. "He is a young man who brings excellent size and ability to our program. Besides being a fine player, Dan excels in the classroom and will be a welcome addition to the WWU community at large."

Young turned down scholarship offers from three NCAA Division I schools - Eastern Washington, Idaho State and Southeastern Louisiana.

Young, who plans to major in business, has a 3.6 (4.0 scale) grade point average. He recently returned from a 10-day trip to China where he learned how business is taught in that country.

Three Highline CC graduates, all seniors, are currently on Western's roster. They are point guard Morris Anderson, center Zach Bruce and forward Derrick Webb.

The Vikings are the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champions.
