BELLINGHAM, Wash. -
Western Washington University's Brandon Elliott earned North Central Conference Special Teams co-Player of the Week honors for Oct. 1-7.
Elliott, a junior from Auburn (graduate of Fife High School), blocked a punt in the final minute that was picked up and returned two yards for a touchdown by Steve Davis as the Vikings completed a dramatic comeback to win 24-17 at St. Cloud State.
It was the first NCC victory for Western, which is in its first year as a football-only member of the league.
The Vikings trailed 17-3 in the fourth quarter, becoming the school's first team in at least 40 years to win after trailing by 14 points in the final period.
Earlier this season, Western placekicker Robby Smith was the NCC Special Teams Player of the Week as he hit a 40-yard field goal with 2.7 seconds left in a 16-13 win over No.15 Washburn. Middle linebacker Shane Simmons was named the league's co-defensive POW for his performance in that contest.
Elliott shared the weekly honor with Central Washington punter Cody Sadler, who averaged 43.3 yards on six punts in a 10-7 loss to South Dakota.
Western (2-4, 1-3) entertains No.14-ranked South Dakota (5-1, 3-0) on Saturday (1 p.m.) at Civic Stadium.
