SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. - The Western Washington University men's golf team finished third among 15 teams at the 58th annual Southern Cal Intercollegiate Tournament which ended Tuesday at the Marbella Country Club. The Vikings, tied for eighth nationally in the latest Golf World/NIKE/Golf Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25, shot a 14-over par 294, tied for the third best round of the day, for a 54-hole total of 872. They were tied for fourth after first-day action Monday. Lynn FL captured the team title at 21-over 861 (295), six strokes in front of runner-up St. Edward's TX (290=867), which entered the day third. Nova Southeastern FL, which was second following the first two rounds, finished fourth at 873 (301). Western's Jake Koppenberg (Jr., Everett) tied for ninth in medalist play at 6-over 216 (74)) and Sean Packer (Sr., Sumner/Auburn-Riverside) tied for 12th at 217 (74). Thomas Jun (Fr., Federal Way/Todd Beamer) led the Vikings with an even par 70 and tied for 16th at 219. Julian Peters (So., Mukilteo/Kamiak) tied for 26th at 223 (76) and Brandon Brown (Jr., Kent/Jefferson) placed 61st at 236 (82). "I thought we played gritty golf today," said Western coach Steve Card. "Thomas Jun played his best round of the season, and we were really close to making it a special round. "There were only a couple of rounds on the day that were better than ours, and we were able to move up from a tie for fourth to alone in third place and didn't lose any ground to the teams in front of us. Overall, for this part of the season, I'd say this was a pretty successful event." Taking medalist honors at 7-under 203 was Micah Burke from Cal State San Bernardino. Burke finished with a 69 after having rounds of 69 and 65 on Monday. Western's next action is March 31-Apr. 1 at the Grand Canyon Invitational. |
