GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Western Washington University's Jake Koppenberg (Sr., Everett) is tied for third in medalist play, one stroke behind the co-leaders, and the Vikings are sixth among 20 teams, just eight strokes off the lead, after two rounds Monday at the 24th annual Grand Canyon University Men's Golf Thunderbird Invitational being held at the Palm Valley Golf Course.

The Vikings, ranked No.18 in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf/NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll, shot a 1-over par 289 in the morning and a 9-under 279 in the afternoon for a 36-hole total of 8-under 568.

Western New Mexico leads at 16-under 560 (282-278). No.14 Cal State San Bernardino is second at 562 (276-286) with Point Loma Nazarene (285-279) and No.13 Chico State (283-281) tied for third at 564 and No.7 Sonoma State (292-274) fifth at 566 (292-274).

"We are far more competitive this time around," said Western coach Steve Card. "I'm starting to see some bright spots in our game."

"We need to come out tomorrow firing on all cylinders if we want to move up. It's going to be a shootout and we need to be deep under par to have a chance."

Koppenberg posted rounds of 70 and 66 in shooting an 8-under 136.

Western's Thomas Jun (So., Federal Way) is tied for ninth at 5-under 139 after rounds of 71 and 68. He had three eagles on the day.

Tied for 53rd at 148 were Julian Peters (Jr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) (76-72) and Brandon Brown (Sr., Kent/Jefferson) (75-73), and Jake Webb (Fr., Issaquah/Skyline) is tied for 69th at 151 (73-78).

Tied for first in medalist play at 7-under 135 are Eric Chavez (67-68) from Western New Mexico and Kenny Pigman (65-70) from Cal State San Bernardino.

Tuesday's final round begins at 8 a.m.
