GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Western Washington University men's golf team shot even par and is tied for third, 12 strokes off the lead, among 21 teams heading into Tuesday's final round at the Grand Canyon University Spring Invitational Tournament being held at the Palm Valley Golf Course.

The Vikings, seventh nationally in the latest Golf World/NIKE/Golf Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25, posted rounds of 295 and 281 on Monday for a 36-hole total of 576.

Central Oklahoma leads at 564 (281-283), four strokes in front of second-place Wayland Baptist TX at 568 (290-278). The Vikings are tied for third with host Grand Canyon (295-281).

"We played well in the afternoon round," said Western coach Steve Card. "We started out well in the morning, but let it slip away on the back nine. However, we recovered well."

"We need to clean up some things tomorrow. But you can always post a low one out here and we'll need that."

Western's Jake Koppenberg (Jr., Everett) continued his hot play with rounds of 3-under 69 and 73 for a 2-under total of 142. That tied him for eighth place in medalist play.

Koppenberg entered the tournament with a scoring average of 71.1, which is school-record pace. He has finished among the top 10 in five of seven tournaments this season.

The Vikings' Sean Packer (Sr., Sumner/Auburn-Riverside) is tied for 14th at 144, starting out with a 76, but finishing with a 4-under 68.

Western's Thomas Jun (Fr., Federal Way/Todd Beamer) is tied for 17th at 145 (76-69), Julian Peters (So., Mukilteo/Kamiak) is tied for 25th at 147 (74-73), and Brandon Brown (Jr., Kent/Jefferson) is tied for 32nd at 148 (77-71).

Wayland Baptist's Jeff Dagg is the medalist leader at 8-under 136 (70-66).
