OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Western Washington University men’s golf team came out of the gates with a red-hot start to the 2017-18 season, finishing the first and second round of the Saint Martin’s Invitational with a 6-stroke lead over the 13-team field after the first 36 holes of the two-day tournament played at Olympia Country & Golf Club.
The Vikings, ranked No. 24 in the Bushnell Golfweek Division II Preseason Coaches Poll, came out with a morning team round of 1-under-par 283 and backed that score up with an even-par 284 in the afternoon 18 on the par 71 layout. “We have been waiting to get into competition and the guys showed they were ready for all 36 holes today,” said 5th-year head coach Luke Bennett, the back-to-back GNAC Coach of the Year. “They all had great individual efforts, which led to a great day for the Vikings to open the 2017-18 season.”
Junior Michael Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) is tied for 2nd in the 72-player field, turning in a 36-hole score of 3-under-par 139. Butler started the day with a blistering 4-under-par 67, and was 1-over-par (72) in the afternoon round.
Freshman Devin Andrews (Kirkland, WA/Juanita) made his collegiate debut a memorable one, firing rounds of 71 (E) and 69 (-2) to tie for 4th place with a 2-under-par 140.
Overall the Vikings had four players fall in the top 20, with senior Adam Barker (Gig Harbor, WA/Peninsula/Olympic College) tied for 11th (+2, 144) and junior Cody Roth tied for 19th (+4, 146). Junior Nick Sparling (Dublin, OH/Ohio State) is just off the top 20 in a tie for 27th place (+6, 148).
Andrew Harrison of the University of British Columbia leads field with rounds of 69 (-2) and 68 (-3) for a 5-under-par 137.
The final round of the tournament concludes Saturday with the Vikings beginning to tee off in the final pairings starting at 12:10 pm. Final results will be posted on WWUVikings.com at the conclusion of the round.
The Vikings will have a quick turnaround hosting the 46th Annual WWU Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Bellingham Golf & Country Club. The 16-team, 93-player field will have a shotgun start for the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament Monday morning at 8:30 am. Live scoring will be provided via Golfstat.com.
