BELLINGHAM, Wash. –
The 24th-ranked Western Washington University men’s golf team sits in a tie for 7th place after the first two rounds of the 46th Annual WWU Invitational played Monday at Bellingham Golf & Country Club.
The Vikings, who are coming off a season-opening win at the Saint Martin’s Invitational, finished the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament at 7-over-par 583. Western had a solid first round with a 1-over-par 289 tie for 2nd place, but slipped a bit in the afternoon round with a 6-over-par 294.
“I thought we battled pretty well all day long, and we had a good opening round, but just didn’t finish great,” said 5th-year head coach Luke Bennett. “It’s a pretty tight pack near the top of the leaderboard, so we’ll look to correct some mistakes and finish off our round a little stronger tomorrow.”
The 16-team field features 10 teams that are within 10 strokes of each other, which should set up an exciting final round that will feature an 8:30 am shotgun start at Bellingham Golf & Country Club. Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia are tied for the lead at 1-under-par 575.
Nine Vikings are competing in the tournament, with the top five counting towards the team scores, and the additional four players competing as individuals.
Junior Michael Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) leads the scoring players in a tie for 8th place, firing back-to-back rounds of 1-under-par 71 to finish the day at 2-under-par 142.
Junior Cody Roth (Bellingham, WA) is tied for 20th at 2-over-par 146, firing an even-par 72 in the morning and a 2-over-par 74 in the afternoon.
Playing as an individual, freshman Brody Bonfilio (Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) is tied for 8th place at 2-under-par 142. Bonfilio was at even par through the first 18 holes, and then recorded a 2-under-par 70 in the second round that featured five birdies. Sophomore Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA) is tied for 11th place in the 93-player field with rounds of 69 (-3) and 74 (+2), recording a 36-hole score of 1-under-par 143.
Defending tournament champion and two-time GNAC Player of the Year Chris Crisologo holds a 2-stroke lead for individual medalist honors at 6-under-par 138. Crisologo fired rounds of 71 (-1) in the morning and a 5-under-par 67 in the afternoon. Tanner Comes (Colorado-Colorado Springs), Scott Kerr (Simon Fraser) and Nick Tenuta (Regis) are tied for 2nd at 4-under-par 140.
The 2017 WWU Invite will wrap up tomorrow with the final 18 holes beginning with an 8:30 am shotgun start [pairings]. Live scoring will be provided via Golfstat.com.
