GOODYEAR, Arizona - With three players among the top four in medalist play, Western Washington University leads an 18-team field at the Grand Canyon University Men's Golf Fall Invitational Tournament heading into final round play Tuesday at The Golf Club of Estrella Ranch. The Vikings fired a second-round 5-under par 283, the best of the day, following an opening-round 291 for a 36-hole total of 574. That is three shots better than second-place Oklahoma City (288-289=577), which led by two strokes after the first 18 holes with Western three behind. Chico State is third at 580 (290-290) and Colorado-Colorado Springs is fourth at 586 (298-288). "We played okay in the morning, hitting the ball well, but struggling to make putts," said Western coach Steve Card (16th year). "And that was the same part way through the second round, then all of a sudden putts started going in." "We didn't do anything spectacular; we just played good solid golf." Western's Brian Barhanovich (So., Everett) is tied for second at 142 (73-69) with Doug Manske (69-73) from Fort Lewis. The medalist leader is Oklahoma City's Julian Valenciana, who has a three-shot advantage at 139, firing a tourney-best 5-under 67 in the morning round. Two Vikings are in a three-way tie for fourth at 143 - Julian Peters (Sr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) (72-71) and Nick Varelia (So., Kent/Kentwood) (72-71). Western's Xavier Dailly (Jr., Burlington/Burlington-Edison) is tied for 15th at 146 (74-72) and Sam Ayotte (Jr., Corvallis, OR/Crescent Valley) is tied for 73rd at 159 (78-81). |
