WWU tied for ninth after Monday's play at Grand Canyon Fall Invitational

GOODYEAR, Arizona - Western Washington University's Jake Koppenberg (Sr., Everett) is tied for sixth in medalist play and the Vikings are tied for ninth among 18 teams Monday following the first two rounds of the Grand Canyon University Fall Invitational Men's Golf Tournament being played at the 7,121-yard The Golf Club of Estrella.
Western posted rounds of 296 and 299 for a 36-hole total of 19-over par 595. The Vikings are 35 shots behind leader Cal State San Bernardino, which shot back-to-back rounds of 280 for a 16-under total of 560.
Tied for second at 569, nine shots behind the Coyotes, are Cal State Monterey Bay (284-285) and Point Loma Nazarene (280-289).
Point Loma Nazarene's Sam Cyr fired a 12-under 60 in the opening round and followed that with a 70 for a 14-under 130 to hold medalist honors. Five strokes behind at 135 is Abilene Christian's Cyril Bouniol (66-69). Three CSUSB players follow with Joe Alldis third at 137 (68-69), Gene Webster fourth at 138 (68-70) and Micah Burke fifth at 140 (70-70).
Koppenberg is in a five-way tie for sixth at 141 (70-71).
Western's Sandy Vaughan (Fr., Seattle/O'Dea) is tied for 32nd at 148 (72-76), Thomas Jun (So., Federal Way/Todd Beamer) is tied for 54th at 152 (76-76), Brandon Brown (Sr., Kent/Thomas Jefferson) is tied for 71st at 155 (78-77) and Julian Peters (Jr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) is 74th at 157 (81-76).
The final round takes place Tuesday.
