PORTLAND, Ore. – Led by three players in the top 10, the Western Washington University men’s golf team is in 3rd place after the first two rounds of the Concordia Invitational played Monday on the par 71 Columbia Edgewater Country Club.
The Vikings are at +14 for the tournament, recording a 36-hole team score of 582. British Columbia leads the 10-team field with a 5-over-par 573, 6 strokes ahead of tournament host Concordia and 9 strokes ahead of WWU leading into Tuesday’s final round.
Freshman Brody Bonfilio (Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) is off to a solid start after finishing 6th at the WWU Invitational two weeks ago, turning in a first-day total of 1-over-par 143. Bonfilio was at even-par after the first round, and finished the day’s second 18 with a 1-over-par 72. He will begin Tuesday’s final round four strokes back of tournament leader Deigo San Pedro (-3, 139) out of the University of British Columbia.
“Brody was rock solid today and in complete control,” said head coach Luke Bennett, in his fifth year guiding the Vikings. “He is a lot of fun to watch right now.”
Sophomore Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA) and junior Cody Roth (Bellingham, WA) are also in the top 10 of the 60-player field, tying for 7th place at 2-over-par 144. Casto opened with a 5-over-par 76, but completed the day on a high note carding a 3-under-par 68. Roth was in 2nd place after the morning round with a 2-under-par 69, but slipped to 7th with a 4-over-par 75 in the afternoon.
“Cody and Ethan played really well today, one in the morning and one in the afternoon,” added Bennett. “But overall it was a good team performance on a very tough course. I think we may have pressed a bit at times when we didn’t need to, but we are right there heading into the final round. A little more patience and I think we can put up a great round.”
Freshman Devin Andrews (Kirkland, WA/Juanita) is tied for 34th (+10) and senior Willy Scholten (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) is tied for 37th (+11) to round out the WWU contingent.
The final round concludes Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 am. WWU will start its round on the first four holes of the Columbia Edgewater Country Club.
