BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University earned the No.6 seed in the West Region and will compete in the NCAA Division II Men's Golf South Central/West Regional beginning Monday, May 5 at Austin, Texas.
Playing host to the three-day, 54-hole regional which will be held at the Grey Rock Golf Course is St. Edward's University.
The Vikings have gone to regionals every year since joining the NCAA, this being their 16th straight appearance.
A total of 108 student-athletes from the West and South Central regions will compete for an opportunity to advance to the NCAA II Championships on May 19-23 at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich. Each region qualified 10 teams and four additional golfers.
Leading WWU will be Kyle Schrader (Jr., Olympia/Tumwater), who took medalist honors last year, and Mark Strickland (Jr., Mukilteo/Kamiak). Both helped the Vikings place second at the 2013 regionals and reach the national semifinals, being named Golf Coaches Athletic Association PING West Region all-stars.
Schrader and Chris Hatch (Fr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) were recently named first-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-stars. Strickland was a second-team pick after being a first-team choice last year.
Schrader has a 75.1 scoring average, Strickland 75.6 and Hatch 75.7.
Completing the Vikings' squad for interim coach Luke Bennett are Craig Crawford (Sr., Stanwood/Highland Christian) and Brennan Emory (R-Fr., Mount Vernon) (76.6 scoring average). Crawford, who was a first-team GNAC all-star in 2012, played in only the last four tournaments this season, but had a team-leading 73.0 scoring average and finished among the top 10 in three of them.
Six squads from the 20-team regional and the top two individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the national championships.
