DANIELS, West Virginia - Western Washington University sophomore Sean Packer (Sumner/Auburn-Riverside) is tied for 50th in medalist play after shooting 5-over 75 in Tuesday's opening round of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship.
The 72-hole tourney, which runs through Friday, is being played on the 7,030-yard Cobb course at The Resort at Glade Springs.
"With the exception of a disappointing triple early in his round, I felt he played pretty well," said Western coach Steve Card. "He battled and worked hard out there. All in all, it wasn't a great day, but not a disastrous day either."
Packer, who began play on the back nine, made par on the first hole. He then had a triple bogey and birdie, before reeling off seven straight pars. On the front nine, Packer carded one birdie and four bogies.
"It's a very demanding golf course in all aspects of the game," Card said. "One errant shot puts you in six-inch rough."
"Right after the triple, Sean made a birdie on No.12, a 490-yard, par 4. Then he played very nicely the next seven holes. But the front nine was very tough."
Greg Koch from Florida Southern is the medalist leader at 4-under 66, one stroke better than Dane Burkhart from South Carolina-Aiken. Cal State Bakersfield's Chris Killmer (Bellingham) is tied for 23rd at 73 and Saint Martin's Shane Prante, the West Region medalist, is tied for 40th at 74.
Defending champion South Carolina-Aiken holds a 3-stroke lead in the team standings after shooting 5-over 285. Tied for second at 288 is West Region champion Cal State Bakersfield.
This is Packer's second national appearance. He was a redshirt last year after tying for 81st at nationals in 2004.
Packer qualified for nationals by being the top individual from a non-qualifying team at the West/Northwest Super Regional. He accomplished that by sinking a 10-foot putt to make par on the first playoff hole with Mark Vallee from Colorado School of Mines, who bogeyed the hole.
