NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - Western Washington University's Patrick Boag (Jr., Yakima/Eisenhower) had a rough start, shooting 17-over par 89, in Tuesday's opening round at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championships being held at The Sagamore Club.

Boag is 104th in the tournament, which runs through Friday. The medalist leader at even par 72 is Ben Vertz from Nova Southeastern. Vertz holds a one-shot lead over four players at 1-over 73.

Nova Southeastern holds a four-shot lead in the team standings at 11-over 299.

"It was just a tough day," said Western coach Steve Card (17th year). "This is a very tough golf course to begin with and when you hit it in the wrong places it gets even tougher."

"When only one of 108 players is even par or better and only one team shoots under 300, that tells you something. This course is a complete examination of a player's skill."

Boag tied for seventh at the Super Central/West Regional two weeks ago and is one of two individuals from non-qualifying teams at that tournament competing at nationals. He placed fourth at the Great Northwest Athletic Championships and entered national play with a 74.7 scoring average.

A total of 20 teams and eight individuals from non-qualifying teams are competing.
