of Mukilteo opened with a 5-over-par 76 on Monday, leaving him tied for 228th and meaning he needs to make a significant move in today's final round of stroke play if he is to advance to the match-play portion of the United States Amateur golf tournament at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga.
The 22-year-old Strickland, a senior-to-be member of the Western Washington University golf team, started on the 10th tee and made the turn at even par. But he took a bogey on the first hole, and then had back-to-back double-bogeys on the third and fourth holes. He added another birdie and another bogey in his remaining holes.
The top 64 players through two rounds of stroke play advance to match play, with the final match scheduled for Sunday.
