Sept. 26, 2011
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University's Nick Varelia has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men's Golfer of the Week for Sept. 18-24.
Varelia, a senior from Kent (graduate of Kentwood High School), tied for second in the WWU Invitational held Friday and Saturday with a 36-hole total of 3-under par 141. He had the second-lowest round Saturday and the third lowest of the tournament, firing a 4-under 68.
Entering the 2011-12 season, Varelia ranked fourth in GNAC history in career scoring with a 74.9 stroke average. WWU golfers hold down the top six spots and eight of the top 10 on the league's career list.
Last year, Varelia was a first-team GNAC all-star with a 74.4 stroke average and took medalist honors at the GNAC Championships as WWU claimed its fourth straight title.
The Vikings, who tied for second at their own 11-team tournament, are competing Monday and Tuesday in the Saint Martin's Invitational at the Olympia Country Club.
