Vikings drop opener 2-1 in overtime to No.17 Sonoma State
Aug. 29, 2009 BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Ben Langwith scored with 2:07 left in overtime, leading nationally ranked Sonoma State University to a 2-1 victory over Western Washington University in a men's college soccer game Saturday at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom Community College. The contest was the season opener for both schools. Langwith slotted home from 18 yards out after a through ball from Ebby Lombardi. It capped a wild second half of overtime that saw the teams combine for six shots in less than eight minutes. Western's best chance in that time came in the 102nd minute on a breakaway by freshman forward Justin Moore (Port Orchard/South Kitsap) that was started when midfielder Kellan Brown (So., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) cleared a Sonoma State shot off the goal line. Seawolves goalkeeper Brook Johnson charged off his line to stop Moore, and also saved a Moore shot from a tight angle barely a minute later. Sonoma State, ranked No.17 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II preseason poll, took the lead in the fifth minute. Brandon de la Cruz forced a turnover near the top of the penalty area and tapped a ball to Cam Vickers, who scored from 17 yards. Western evened the score less than two minutes into the second half, as midfielder Oscar Jimenez (So., Mount Vernon) stepped in front of an attempted clearance and with his first touch blasted a shot in from 20 yards. The Vikings had a 20-13 advantage in shots, including a 10-3 edge in the second half, but Johnson made 11 saves. Christian Warman (Jr., Sedro-Woolley) had four saves for Western. The loss marked the sixth straight season Western has lost to Sonoma State. The Vikings host The Evergreen State College on Tues., Sept. 1 (7 p.m.).
