CHICO, Calif. - Freshman defender Mike Janjigian scored his first collegiate goal in the 88th minute, giving Chico State University a 2-1 victory over Western Washington University in a non-conference men's soccer game Thursday night at University Soccer Stadium.

It was the season opener for both teams.

Janjigian punched in a deflected header by Chris Akwaja. The play began with a corner kick by Evan Johnston.

The Wildcats broke a scoreless tie in the 55th minute when Akwaja scored on a header of a cross by Johnston.

Western tied the score at 1-1 in the 62nd minute, defender Gibson Bardsley (Sr., Fall City/Mount Si) scoring from 10 yards on ball put on his feet by midfielder Oscar Jimenez (Jr., Mount Vernon).

It was the 24th goal of Bardsley's four-year career, moving him into fifth place on the school's all-time list. The assist by Jimenez was his 11th in three seasons, tying him for 10th all-time in that category.

Chico State had an 18-4 advantage in shots and seven corner kicks to none for Western.

Goalkeeper Christian Warman (Sr., Sedro-Woolley) had seven saves for the Vikings.

"Chico State had a great game plan and really played to its strengths," said Western coach Travis Connell. "Even though we had our moments with Bardsley's great goal and Warman's great saves, we weren't able to turn the game in our favor."

Western is at San Francisco State on Saturday (2:30 p.m.) before entertaining Humboldt State in its home opener Monday (2:30 p.m. noon) at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom Community College.
