Western opens campaign with 2-1 loss to No.8 Chico State
Sept. 3, 2011
BELLINGHAM, Wash - Forward Kellan Brown (Sr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) scored a late goal, but it wasn't enough as Western Washington University opened its season with a 2-1 loss to nationally ranked Chico State University in a non-conference men's soccer contest Saturday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
Chico State, ranked No.8 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 Poll, improved to 1-0-1. The Wildcats played to a 0-0 overtime draw at Seattle Pacific on Thursday.
"This was a missed opportunity," said Western coach Travis Connell. "We were rested, Chico State wasn't, but we played like the tired team."
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the 20th minute, as Micah Miranda played a pass from the left corner of the penalty area to Ferid Celosmanovic, who then finished with a shot low to the far post.
Chico State doubled the lead in the 74th minute, as Octavio Guzman converted a penalty kick after Cody Levar was fouled.
Brown, who had a header cleared off the line at the end of the first half, pulled a goal back for Western in the 86th minute. Dean Byron (So., Renton/Liberty) headed a ball into the penalty area, and Brown, with his back to the goal, struck an overhead kick from 15 yards out, tucking the ball into the right side of the net.
The Vikings had one good chance to tie with two minutes left, as Bailey Martin (So., Tacoma/Stadium) got on the end of a long free kick, but headed over the bar from 10 yards out.
"It was a good goal by Kellan, but overall, we need to play better," said Connell.
Western goalkeeper Leo Cohen (So., Seattle/Roosevelt) had eight saves.
The Vikings visit San Rafael, Calif., on Wednesday for a non-conference game with Dominican University.
