WWU blanks Dixie State, 1-0
Sept. 9, 2012
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Andrew Weishaar (Jr., Puyallup) scored in the 30th minute, lifting Western Washington University to a 1-0 victory over Dixe State on Sunday afternoon in a West Region men's soccer contest at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom Community College. The triumph was the second straight for the Vikings, who improved to 2-2-0. Dixie State fell to 1-3-0. The Vikings had an 11-1 advantage in shots in the first half hour and made it pay off when defender Conner Pichette (Fr., Tacoma/Wilson) played a ball that split the Dixie State backline, freeing Weishaar, who took two quick touches and finished to the far post from 12 yards out. It was the first goal of the season for Weishaar, who had seven shot attempts Sunday. WWU finished with a 22-10 advantage in shots, but Dixie State had a number of good chances to equalize in the second half. The best chance for the Red Storm came in the 57th minute, when Tyler Albretsen was alone eight yards out, but shot wide. Shortly after that, WWU goalkeeper Keegan Rogers (So., Portland, OR/Portland Christian) was forced to make a diving stop on a shot by Joshua Cook. The Vikings' best opportunity for an insurance goal came in the 70th minute, when a shot from 15 yards by Sujinda Dangvan (Sr., Vancouver/Mountain View) forced a diving save by Dixie State goalkeeper Tyler Walters. Who had nine saves. "I'm ecstatic with the way we've played this weekend," said WWU coach Travis Connell, whose team claimed a 1-0 victory over Hawaii Pacific on Friday. "We've built this team to play defense, to outwork the other team, and to be successful on counter attacks. The last two games, we've done that." WWU begins Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Thursday (12:30 p.m.), playing host to Northwest Nazarene.
