WWU falls 1-0 to Hawaii Pacific
Sept. 14, 2013
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Brais Garcia scored in the 26th minute, lifting Hawaii Pacific University to a 1-0 victory over Western Washington University on Saturday in men's soccer action at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Vikings, who fell to 2-2-0. Hawaii Pacific improved to 2-1-1.
The Sea Warrior goal came as Jimmy Baggett won a loose ball near the center circle and played it forward to Felipe Silva. Silva used his first touch to play a square ball into the path of Garcia, who finished from 15 yards.
WWU's best chance to equalize came in the 55th minute, when off a corner kick, an Andrew Weishaar (Sr., Puyallup) header went off the crossbar. The Vikings, who had a 12-10 advantage in shots, had a final good opportunity in the 84th minute, when a header by Kurtis Pederson (So., Puyallup/Bellarmine Prep) forced a diving save by Hawaii Pacific goalkeeper Mael Lefebvre.
"We weren't as sharp as we needed to be," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "Every game we play will be close, we need to treat all of them like a championship game. Hopefully we can learn from this and build on it, but tonight, Hawaii Pacific was the better team."
WWU next opens Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on the road, traveling to Northwest Nazarene on Thursday, Sept. 19 (4 p.m.).
