NAMPA, Id. - Midfielder Gabriele Zaccagnini (Jr., Olympia/Capital) assisted on both goals as the Western Washington University men's soccer team defeated Northwest Nazarene University, 2-1, in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams Thursday at the NNU Soccer Field.
The Vikings improved to 3-2-0 overall. NNU, which has played all of its games at home this season, fell to 0-2-2.
"The first half we did very well, then we struggled a bit in the second half, but we were able to get the win," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. WWU's game winner came in the 88th minute, midfielder Tye Hastings (R-Jr., Mill Creek/Jackson) finding the net after receiving a cross from Zaccagnini. The goal was Hastings' second of the year.
The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute as forward Andrew Weishaar (Sr., Puyallup) fended off two defenders to score his third goal of the young campaign after receiving a long pass from Zaccagnini.
NNU tied the game in the 58th minute on a goal by Fredy Razo, who got a through ball from Luke Broz.
Brisbon praised the play Uche Ugwoaba (So., Burien/Highline), who played center back for the first time.
The Crusaders had advantages of 16-8 in shots and 7-4 in corner kicks.
