Vikings fall 2-1 in overtime to MSU Billings after tying game in 89th minute
Sept. 24, 2009
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - A late goal by midfielder Kellan Brown (So., Tacoma/Bellarmine) forced overtime, but it wasn't enough as Western Washington University fell 2-1 to Montana State University Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Thursday night at Orca Field on the Whatcom Community College campus. The Vikings fell to 3-6-0 with their third straight loss and their fifth in the last six games. It was also the third overtime loss of the season for Western, which was playing its GNAC opener. Chris Andre got the game-winner with 4:45 left in overtime for MSUB, which improved to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play. "The result is disappointing, but I'm proud of how we battled back after going down a goal early," said Western coach Travis Connell. "We showed some of our best character of the year and found a way to tie the game up." The Yellowjackets took the lead in the third minute. Sam Charles held off a defender deep in the penalty area and fed Jeremy DeHerrera, whose low shot through traffic found the right corner of the goal. After that, the Vikings dominated much of the contest, posting a 19-6 advantage in shots. But Western did not even the score until the 89th minute, as Brown took a long pass from Tyler Bjork (So., Kirkland/Juanita), fought off a defender as he reached the penalty area, then tapped a ball just over the onrushing dive of MSUB goalkeeper Matt Mitchell. The Vikings had an apparent game-winner five minutes into overtime, but the goal by Keith Ferris (So., Richland) was waived off by an offside call. MSUB then got the game winner midway through the second half of overtime, as Andre chested in a long free kick by Zach Yeager. It was just the second Western loss to MSUB in 12 series meetings. The assist by Charles on the opening goal extended his GNAC-record streak of games with a point to 12, but another league-record streak of nine consecutive games with a goal ended. Western meets Northwest Nazarene in a GNAC counter Saturday (7 p.m.).
