BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Jeremy Wentzel (So., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) had a goal and an assist off free kicks as Western Washington University defeated University of Mary, 3-1, on Thursday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
The Vikings improved to 4-2-1 overall with their third win in four games and 2-0-1in conference play. Andrew Weishaar (Sr., Puyallup) also notched his team-high fourth goal of the season for WWU.
U-Mary remained winless at 0-5-0 overall and 0-3-0 in league action.
"It was a good win," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "We possessed the ball better than we have lately, which is something we've been working on and will continue to work on."
Wentzel had the only goal of the first half in the 22nd minute, taking a free kick just outside the penalty area and driving it low into the left side of the net.
Wentzel was also involved in putting WWU up 2-0 in the 60th minute, launching a free kick from the right side that Troy McCarty (Fr., Snohomish) headed home from 10 yards.
Thirty seconds later, Weishaar added insurance, putting a shot off the base of the right post, but having the rebound come straight at him and finishing from the goalmouth.
The Marauders scored in the 76th minute, as Alex Boyes hit a looping shot in from the high left corner of the penalty area with an assist from Ramiro Riviera
"This was a good home win in the GNAC," Brisbon said. "If we're going to contend for the title, we have to win at home, and we did that tonight.
