Vikings score twice in one minute, rally for 3-1 win over Northwest Nazarene
Sept. 26, 2009
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - A pair of goals just 52 seconds apart lifted Western Washington University to a 3-1 triumph over Northwest Nazarene University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Saturday night at Orca Field on the Whatcom Community College campus. The triumph snapped a three-game losing streak for the Vikings, who improved to 4-6-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the GNAC. NNU fell to 3-6-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play. The game was tied at 1-1 inside the last 17 minutes before Western suddenly took control behind two plays involving midfielder Matt Fishbaugher (Jr., Redmond). First, Fishbaugher played a through ball to forward Gibson Bardsley (Jr., Fall City/Mount Si) that Bardsley chipped in from 15 yards to give Western the lead. Soon after, Fishbaugher scored himself with a 30-yard blast from the right side. Both goals came in the 74th minute. NNU had held a 1-0 lead at halftime, as forward John Stump received a long pass from Alex Mangeac at the right corner of the penalty area, stepped inside a defender and drilled a low shot just inside the near post. Western evened the score in the 50th minute as midfielder Oscar Jimenez (So., Mount Vernon) scored on a volley from 20 yards after the ball came to him as a result of a contested ball between midfielder Kellan Brown (So., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) and NNU goalkeeper Alexander Engemann. The Vikings had an 18-12 edge in shots, including an 11-4 advantage in the first half. Western is now 7-0-0 against the Crusaders all-time. The Vikings entertain unbeaten Seattle Pacific (6-0-3) in a GNAC counter Saturday, Oct. 3 (7 p.m.).
