BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Andrew Weishaar (Sr., Puyallup) scored two goals, including the game winner in the 78th minute, as Western Washington University defeated South Dakota School of Mines, 2-1, on Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

The Vikings improved to 5-2-1 overall and are unbeaten in their last four games (3-0-1). They are 3-0-1in conference play.

SD Mines fell to 0-7-0 overall and 0-4-0 in league action.

Weishaar opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Troy McCarty (Fr., Snohomish) played a long diagonal ball from right back, and Weishaar took two touches and hit a left-footed blast from 30 yards that flew into the right corner of the net.

The Hardrockers leveled the score in the 62nd minute. After a long free kick led to a scramble in the penalty area, Michael McGraw latched onto the ball and finished from six yards.

got the game-winner 16 minutes later, taking a pass from Jeremy Wentzel (So., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) and driving a shot low inside the far post from 16 yards on the left side.

Weishaar has a team-high six goals this season and is now eighth in school history with 22 career goals.

"It wasn't a very good game for us," said WWU coach Greg Brisbon. "We didn't come mentally prepared and it showed. Thankfully, Andrew was fantastic with his finishing."

The Vikings had to hang on in the final seconds. SD Mines earned a corner in the final 15 seconds, and brought goalkeeper Timothy Tribbett forward. A deflection fell to Tribbett, but his shot from five yards was blocked by WWU's Uche Ugwoaba (So., Burien/Highline) on the goal line.

WWU travels to Saint Martin's on Thursday, Oct. 3 (3:15 p.m.), for a GNAC counter.
