SEATTLE, Wash. - Troy McCarty (Fr., Snohomish) scored midway through the first half and Western Washington University held on for a 1-1 tie against Seattle Pacific University on Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest at Interbay Stadium.
The Vikings, who ran their unbeaten streak to six games (3-0-3), are 5-2-3 overall and 3-0-3 in GNAC contests.
SPU, which upset NCAA Division II No.1-ranked Simon Fraser 2-1 on Thursday, is now 6-1-2 overall and on an eight-match unbeaten run, and are 4-0-2 in the GNAC.
"It was a real hard game," said WWU coach Greg Brisbon. "I was real proud of the effort that the team put into it."
opened the scoring in the 26th minute. Jeremy Wentzel (So.,Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) took a corner from the left, and McCarty, just inside the right post, headed the ball firmly into the upper right corner for his fourth goal of the year.
The Falcons equalized less than a minute into the second half. Bryson Pavel scored the goal, making a near post run off a Jordan Kollars free kick from the right and flicking a header into the left side of the net.
From there, Seattle Pacific, which had a 26-11 advantage in shots, applied much of the pressure, including a 5-1 margin in shots during overtime, but the WWU defense stood firm.
Goalkeeper Keegan Rogers (Jr., Portland, OR/Portland Christian) had seven saves for the Vikings, including a pair of diving deflections around the right post in the first half.
WWU split with Seattle Pacific last season, each winning on the others' field. The Falcons hold a 42-14-7 series advantage.
WWU, which is in the middle of a five-game stretch of road games, is at Simon Fraser on Saturday, Oct. 12 (7:30 p.m.), for a GNAC counter.
