Vikings lose 1-0 to Cal Baptist in neutal site match-up
Oct. 8, 2011
PHOENIX, Ari. - Unable to capitalize on its scoring opportunities, Western Washington University fell 1-0 to Cal Baptist University in a NCAA Division II West Regional men's soccer neutral site contest Saturday on the Grand Canyon University Soccer Field. The Vikings dropped to 4-6-0 with their second straight loss. Cal Baptist improved to 7-4-0, snapping a two-game losing streak. "We didn't really play that well, but we had some chances and weren't able to make them," said Western coach Travis Connell. WWU midfielder Kellan Brown (Sr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) had a one-on-one chance in the 15th minute, but Cal Baptist goalkeeper Joey Pacheco made an outstanding save. The Lancers scored in the 36th minute, Osvaldo Bastida reaching the net from the right side of the box, his fourth goal of the season. Michael Salazar was credited with an assist. Late in the first half, the Vikings' Caden Sowers (R-Fr., Ferndale) just missed on a cross from Oscar Jimenez (Sr., Mount Vernon), and with five seconds left in the game, Keith Ferris (Sr., Richland) headed a corner kick just wide. Cal Baptist had a 10-8 edge in shots, and WWU had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Connell praised the play of Sowers and fellow midfielder Steven Hughes (So., Vancouver/Mountain View). The Vikings, who lost 2-1 to nationally No.16-ranked Grand Canyon on Thursday, end their three-game road trip Tuesday (1 p.m.) at St. George, Utah, against Dixie State.
