BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Andrew Weishaar (Jr., Puyallup) had a goal and an assist as Western Washington University defeated University of Mary, 4-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Saturday night at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
The Vikings, who snapped a three-game winless streak (0-2-1), improved to 5-6-2 overall, 3-5-2 in the GNAC.
U-Mary fell to 3-8-2 overall and 2-6-1 in league play.
Midfielder Gabriele Zaccagnini (So., Olympia/Capital) opened the scoring in the 15th minute. An attempted clearance of a cross by Pat Cole (So., Bellingham/Sehome) fell to Zaccagnini, who scored from eight yards for his first goal of the season.
Midfielder Sujinda Dangvan (Vancouver/Mountain View) made the score 2-0 in the 20th minute, converting a penalty kick for his team-high fifth goal of the year, and then Weishaar notched his fourth goal 10 minutes later, heading home a 60-yard ball played from the right sideline by Dean Byron (Jr., Renton/Liberty).
Leonard Kusina (Fairbault, MN/Shattick-St. Mary's) completed the onslaught in the 34th minute, taking a pass from Weishaar and chipping the ball past onrushing U-Mary goalkeeper Michael Frenzel.
"Tonight we combined stingy defense and dangerous offense," said WWU coach Travis Connell. "When we're able to combine those things, we're a good team." WWU goalkeeper Keegan Rogers (Portland, OR/Portland Christian) had six saves in earning his second consecutive shutout. U-Mary had a 20-16 advantage in shots.
The game was the last at home for four seniors - Dangvan, defender Bryan Hall (Tacoma/Stadium), defender Jake Jorgensen (Bellingham/Meridian) and forward Justin Moore (Port Orchard/South Kitsap). Moore sat out the game because of a hamstring injury.
WWU finished 5-2-3 at home, with both defeats coming against teams ranked in the top 10 nationally in NCAA Division II.
The Vikings complete their season with five road games, beginning at Montana State Billings on Thursday (3:30 p.m.), Oct. 18.
