Oct. 18, 2010
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forwards Gibson Bardsley (Sr., Fall City/Mount Si) and Andrew Weishaar (Fr., Puyallup) each scored two goals as Western Washington University allowed just one shot in blanking University of Mary ND, 5-0, in a non-conference men's soccer game Monday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
The Vikings improved to 6-5-2 with their third win in four games. The only loss during that stretch was to NCAA Division II West Region No.1-ranked Grand Canyon. Mary remained winless at 0-15-0.
Western, which led 3-0 at halftime, had a 36-1 advantage in shots for the game, with Mary not getting a shot until a free kick in the 89th minute.
Bardsley opened the scoring in the 25th minute, finishing off a rebound of his own initial shot. He also had the opening goal of the second half, scoring off an assist by midfielder Steven Hughes (Fr., Vancouver/Columbia River).
Bardsley now has 13 goals on the season and 36 for his career, the latter mark ranking second in school history behind the 41 goals of Peter LaBarge (1989-90).
Weishaar scored in the 42nd minute after taking a long pass from midfielder Oscar Jimenez (Jr., Mount Vernon). He added his second goal in the 62nd minute with Bardsley assisting.
Jimenez and Bardsley are tied for fifth in career assists with 14.
"It's nice to have a game where a lot of guys could contribute," said Western coach Travis Connell. "We were able both to score and defend."
Western goalkeeper Leo Cohen (R-Fr., Seattle/Roosevelt) did not have to make a save in earning his first career shutout. Derek Luptak had nine saves for Mary, seven of them in the second half.
Western completes a four-game home stand Saturday (7 p.m.), entertaining league-leading and undefeated Simon Fraser (12-0, 5-0) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference counter.
