BISMARCK, N.D. - Jeremy Wentzel (So., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) scored twice as Western Washington University completed a string of five road games with a 3-1 victory over University of Mary on Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest at the MDU Resources Bowl.
The Vikings, who were 2-1-2 during that stretch, improved to 7-3-3 overall and 5-1-3 in GNAC play. They are 5-1-3 in their last nine games.
Mary fell to 1-9-1 overall and 1-7-1 in conference action.
WWU, which won 1-0 at South Dakota School of Mines on Thursday, plays its remaining five regular-season games at home.
"Overall, it was another great effort," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "I was really proud of how they handled this road trip and I'm looking forward to being at home."
Wentzel, who now has four goals this season, gave WWU a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute. He also scored the game's final goal off a rebound in the 72nd minute.
The Vikings' Andrew Weishaar (Sr., Puyallup) made it 2-0 in the 54th minute, the goal being his team-leading eighth of the year. His 24 career goals put him all alone in seventh place among WWU leaders.
Receiving assists on the WWU goals were Matt Temple (So., Beaverton, OR), Gabriele Zaccagnini (Jr., Olympia/Capital) and Tye Hastings (Jr., Mill Creek/Jackson). Zaccagnini now has four assists this fall, tying him for the team lead with Wentzel.
U-Mary's goal came in the 63rd minute as Rory Bratt scored on a cross from Aaron Brennan.
The Vikings had a 21-18 shot advantage with goalkeeper Keegan Rogers (Jr., Portland, OR/Portland Christian) making five saves.
WWU begins its five-game home stand, all of them GNAC counters, on Thursday, Oct. 24 (7:30 p.m.) against Montana State Billings at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
