BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Sean Russell scored the only goal of the game, giving Seattle Pacific University a 1-0 triumph over Western Washington University in a tightly played Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Thursday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
The Vikings, who had a four-match winning streak snapped, fell to 9-4-3 overall and 7-2-3 in GNAC play. The loss probably eliminated any remaining hopes of WWU reaching the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
SPU improved to 11-1-3 overall and 9-0-3 in the conference, extending its unbeaten streak to 14 games.
The lone goal came in the 18th minute. Blaine Carver headed down a ball back to Russell, who ran onto the pass and unloaded a blast from 35 yards out that flew into the upper right corner.
"It was a good goal by SPU, a great strike," said WWU coach Greg Brisbon. "This conference is very tight, and sometimes what it takes to get a win is a great goal like that."
The Vikings had a series of chances early on, forcing three saves by Falcon goalkeeper Cody Lang, including a Tye Hastings (Jr., Mill CreekJackson) effort that Lang tipped around the post for a corner kick just 90 seconds in.
WWU's best chance of the night was the only shot on target for either team in the second half. Andrew Weishaar (Sr., Puyallup) fired a low shot from the top of the penalty area, and Lang, diving to his right, got a fingertip to it. The ball then spun back toward goal, but SPU defender Davis Karaica cleared the ball off the line and out of danger.
The teams were even in shots at 9-9, with the Vikings having a 4-2 advantage in shots on target.
WWU hosts Saint Martin's on Sunday, Nov. 3 (1 p.m.), in a GNAC counter. It is the fourth of five consecutive home games to conclude the regular season for the Vikings.
