Western ends eight-game road stretch with 1-1 overtime tie versus Mary ND
Nov. 2, 2009
BILLINGS, Mont. - Western Washington University completed a stretch of eight straight road contests as it tied University of Mary ND, 1-1 in overtime, in a non-league men's soccer game Monday at the Montana State Billings Yellowjacket Soccer Stadium. The Vikings, now 7-11-1, stretched their unbeaten streak to three games, the longest of the season. Mary is now 8-10-2. Kellan Brown (So., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) gave Western an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, dribbling by two defenders to score from 10 yards. Credited with an assist was Tyler Bjork (So., Kirkland/Juanita). It was Brown's team-leading 10th goal of the season, and Bjork's fourth assist. That stood up until with five seconds left in regulation, Mary's Chris Stier knocked in a corner kick from Jake Hawkins to tie the score at 1-1, sending the game into overtime. "It was a disappointing result, but it was nice to finish it (road stretch) going three games without a loss," said Western coach Travis Connell, whose team had a 25-8 advantage in shots. "We're looking forward to playing at home on Thursday." "They (Mary) made good plays when they needed to, including a number of great defensive saves. You have to give them credit, they wouldn't go away easily." Western nearly ended the game 10 minutes into the extra period. The Mary goalkeeper cleared a shot, but it went to Brendan Quilici (Jr., Battle Ground/Columbia River), whose shot at an open net was headed out by a Marauder defender. After losing its first three overtime games this fall, Western now has a win and a tie in its last two extra period contests. The Vikings entertain league champion Saint Martin's University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest Thursday (7 p.m.) at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom Community College.
