WHAT'S HAPPENING...the Western Washington University men's soccer team (0-2-0) travels to Colorado for its first road games of the season, facing Colorado Christian on Thursday before opposing MSU Denver on Saturday...the Vikings enter their second week of regular season non-conference games after opening the season at home last week....WWU will host its last non-conference game of the regular season on Sept. 16 against Fort Hays State.

LAST WEEK...the Vikings lost a pair of tightly-contested games to begin the regular season with both defeats coming on an opponent golden goal, falling 2-1 in overtime to Sonoma State last Thursday before Chico State edged the Vikings, 3-2, in double overtime as the Wildcats scored the match-winning goal with 12 seconds left in the second overtime period.

NOT OVER UNTIL OVERTIME...WWU played seven games that went to overtime during the 2016 campaign, including a stretch of four consecutive games that went to overtime as part of five overtime games within a six-game span during last season...Vikings were 2-1-4 in overtime games last year, tying the school record for ties in a season...WWU has gone to overtime in both of its games during the 2017 campaign.

EARLY OFFENSE...The Vikings have grabbed an early lead in both games during the 2017 season...scored in the 11th minute to take a lead against Sonoma State last Thursday before scoring in the 10th minute to take a lead against Chico State last Saturday...during 2016 the Vikings scored 10 first-half goals with 20 of their 32 goals on the season coming during the second half of games.

HOME SWEET HOME...WWU has played two non-conference games at home and will play one more non-conference contest at Harrington Field (Sept. 16 vs Fort Hays State, 7 pm) following the trip to Colorado....Vikings will open the conference schedule with five of the team's first seven conference games at home...Vikings went 7-1-1 at Harrington Field in 2016.

QUICK FACTS...WWU went 10-5-4 overall in 2016 and 6-3-3 in the GNAC...returns 10 starters and 18 letter winners from­­­ last year's squad...will be replacing two starters...returns NSCAA 2016 All-West Region Third Team honorees Anthony Dean and Tyler Visten, both All-GNAC Second Team selections as well...also returns First Team All-GNAC choice Luke Olney and honorable mention pick Jeremiah Lee...2017 squad features seven seniors, five juniors, seven sophomores and nine freshmen.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW...

  • To the Tournament - WWU earned the program's first-ever NCAA II Tournament berth in 2016, advancing to the second round of the tournament.
  • GNAC Preseason Poll - The Vikings were picked to place 2nd by the 2017 GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Familiar Foes - The Vikings also played Colorado Christian and MSU Denver during the 2016 season, hosting both teams in Bellingham...topped Colorado Christian, 4-0, and lost, 2-1, to MSU Denver.
  • Ranked Opponents - Simon Fraser is ranked No. 3 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll...Vikings went 1-0-1 against SFU last year, will play the Clan twice in 2017...2017 opponent Fort Hays State was No. 11 in the preseason poll but unranked in most recent poll...previously unranked Chico State is now ranked No. 19.
  • Uncharacteristic Start - WWU has begun the regular season 0-2-0 only twice over the last 10 seasons...the last time the Vikings started 0-2-0 they responded with consecutive wins in their next two games.
  • Not in the Net - WWU totaled 8 shutouts during the 2016 season, the 2nd-highest total in the GNAC.
  • Offensive Opportunities - WWU led the GNAC and ranked 16th nationally in 2016 with 331 total shots (17.42 per game) along with ranking 2nd among GNAC teams in corner kicks with 114 (6.00 per game)...Vikings are averaging 13 shots per game and 6 corner kicks per game in 2017.
  • Balanced Attack - Seven players scored multiple goals for WWU in 2016, including five returners in 2017...three players have scored a goal for WWU during the young­ 2017 season.
  • Coach Brisbon - WWU head coach Greg Brisbon is in his 5th season as head coach of the WWU men's soccer program...directed the Vikings to a 35-29-1 record as head coach...spent previous 12 years as the Vikings assistant coach, eight as the associate head coach...led the Vikings to their first NCAA II Tournament appearance and first postseason victory in 2016 with a 10-5-4 record...named GNAC co-Coach of the Year in 2016.

GNAC COACHES POLL...WWU enters the season picked to finish 2nd by the GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll...finished tied for 2nd last season to post the program's highest GNAC finish since 2009.
