WHAT'S HAPPENING...the Western Washington men's soccer team (1-2-1) concludes the non-conference portion of the schedule on Saturday, hosting Fort Hays State (0-3-1) at Harrington Field at 7 pm...the Vikings opened the non-conference schedule with home games against Sonoma State and Chico State before traveling to Colorado for games against Colorado Christian and MSU Denver...conference schedule begins on Sept. 21 with a home game against Saint Martin's (4 pm).

SATURDAY DOUBLEHEADER...both WWU soccer teams will be in action Saturday, hosting a doubleheader at Harrington Field starting at 4 pm...admission is 2-for-1, with special t-shirt and poster giveaways for both games...the women host Western Oregon at 4 pm in the GNAC opener and the men host Fort Hays State starting at 7 pm.

LAST WEEK...WWU went 1-0-1 during its first road trip of the season...tied Colorado Christian 2-2 after two overtime periods and defeated MSU Denver 2-1...erased two-goal deficit during tie at Colorado Christian and broke 1-1 tie in 75th minute on a goal by Anthony Dean to claim first win of season at MSU Denver.

NOT OVER UNTIL OVERTIME...the Vikings went to overtime in their first three games of the 2017 season...played seven games that went to overtime during the 2016 campaign, including a stretch of four consecutive games that went to overtime as part of five overtime games within a six-game span during last season...went 2-1-4 in overtime games last year, tying the school record for ties in a season.

EARLY OFFENSE...the Vikings have scored in the 23rd minute or earlier in each game of the 2017 season, taking the lead with an early goal in three of four games...during 2016 the Vikings scored 10 first-half goals with 20 of their 32 goals on the season coming during the second half.

EACH AND EVERY GAME...Anthony Dean and Christian Rotter have each recorded at least 1 goal or 1 assist in each game during the 2017 season...Dean had an assist in the season opener before scoring a goal in each of the last three games, along with a second assist at MSU Denver...Rotter tallied an assist in each of the first three games for WWU before scoring the first WWU goal at MSU Denver last weekend...Dean leads the GNAC with 8 points while Rotter is tied for 7th with 5 points.

HOME SWEET HOME...Saturday's game against Fort Hays State will be the third home game of the season for WWU...will open the conference schedule with five of the team's first seven conference games at home...Vikings went 7-1-1 at Harrington Field in 2016.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW...

  • To the Tournament - WWU earned the program's first-ever NCAA II Tournament berth in 2016, advancing to the second round of the tournament.
  • GNAC Preseason Poll - The Vikings were picked to place 2nd by the 2017 GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Familiar Foe - WWU will face Fort Hays State for the second straight season in the second-ever meeting between the schools...defeated the then No.18-ranked Tigers 1-0 at Harrington Field last season...Tigers went 14-5-1 last season, reaching the NCAA Tournament.
  • Ranked Opponents - Simon Fraser is ranked No. 2 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll...Vikings went 1-0-1 against SFU last year, will play the Clan twice in 2017...Fort Hays State was No. 11 in the preseason poll but unranked in most recent poll...Chico State was ranked No. 19 last week but is not currently ranked.
  • Not in the Net - WWU totaled 8 shutouts during the 2016 season, the 2nd-highest total in the GNAC.
  • Offensive Opportunities - WWU led the GNAC and ranked 16th nationally in 2016 with 331 total shots (17.42 per game) along with ranking 2nd among GNAC teams in corner kicks with 114 (6.00 per game)...Vikings are averaging 15 shots per game and 7.50 corner kicks per game in 2017.
  • Balanced Attack - Seven players scored multiple goals for WWU in 2016, including five returners in 2017...five players have scored a goal for WWU during the young­ 2017 season.
  • Coach Brisbon - WWU head coach Greg Brisbon is in his 5th season as head coach of the WWU men's soccer program...directed the Vikings to a 36-29-12 record as head coach...spent previous 12 years as the Vikings assistant coach, eight as the associate head coach...led the Vikings to their first NCAA II Tournament appearance and first postseason victory in 2016 with a 10-5-4 record...named GNAC co-Coach of the Year in 2016.

2016 SEASON IN REVIEW...the Vikings earned program's first-ever berth into the NCAA Division II Tournament as the No. 6 seed in the West Region...also earned the program's first-ever NCAA Division II Tournament win with a 3-2 (OT) victory against third-seeded Dixie State in the opening round...fell 2-0 to second-seeded UC San Diego in the second round of the NCAA Tournament...finished in a tie for 2nd in the GNAC with a 10-5-4 overall record 6-3-3 record in GNAC play...concluded the season with a 7-1-1 record at Harrington Field and a 2-4-3 record on the road...1-0-0 neutral site record...also tied 4 times to tie the school record for ties in a season.

GNAC COACHES POLL...WWU enters the season picked to finish 2nd by the GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll...finished tied for 2nd last season to post the program's highest GNAC finish since 2009.
