WHAT'S HAPPENING...the Western Washington men's soccer team (1-2-2) begins the Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule this week, hosting Saint Martin's on Thursday before traveling to face Seattle Pacific on Saturday...Vikings recently concluded a stretch of five non-conference games, which featured home games against Sonoma State, Chico State and Fort Hays State along with road contests at MSU Denver and Colorado Christian.

THURSDAY DOUBLEHEADER...both WWU soccer teams will host home games at Harrington Field on Thursday, marking the second consecutive home soccer doubleheader following a doubleheader last Saturday...a special 2-for-1 admission deal for tickets will once again be offered to watch both games...the men host Saint Martin's at 4 pm in the GNAC opener and the women host Simon Fraser starting at 7 pm.

LAST WEEK...WWU played just one game last week, battling to a 2-2 (2 OT) tie against visiting Fort Hays State last Saturday...Anthony Dean scored both goals for the Vikings via penalty kicks just 13 seconds apart during the 50th minute in the second half.

NOT OVER UNTIL OVERTIME...the Vikings have been to overtime in four of five games in 2017...played seven games that went to overtime during the 2016 campaign, including a stretch of four consecutive games that went to overtime as part of five overtime games within a six-game span during last season...went 2-1-4 in overtime games last year, tying the school record for ties in a season...WWU is 0-2-2 in overtime games during 2017.

EARLY OFFENSE...the Vikings scored in the 23rd minute or earlier during each of the first four games during the 2017 season, taking the lead with an early goal in three of four games...during 2016 the Vikings scored 10 first-half goals with 20 of their 32 goals on the season coming during the second half...WWU scored twice early in the second half last Saturday against Fort Hays State.

CONSISTENT CONTRIBUTORS...Anthony Dean has recorded a goal or an assist in each game during 2017...Dean had an assist in the season opener before scoring at least 1 goal in each of the last four games...scored twice against Fort Hays State and had a second assist at MSU Denver...Christian Rotter has a goal or assist in four of five games after tallying an assist in each of the first three games for WWU before scoring a goal at MSU Denver...Dean leads the GNAC with 12 points and 5 goals, while Rotter is tied for 8th with 5 points and tied for 2nd with 3 assists.

HOME SWEET HOME...Thursday's GNAC opener against Saint Martin's will be the fourth home game of the season for WWU...Vikings open the conference schedule with five of the team's first seven conference games at home...Vikings went 7-1-1 at Harrington Field in 2016.

  • To the Tournament - WWU earned the program's first-ever NCAA II Tournament berth in 2016, advancing to the second round of the tournament.
  • GNAC Preseason Poll - The Vikings were picked to place 2nd by the 2017 GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • The Opponents - Seattle Pacific is 4-1-0 after playing the same five non-conference teams WWU has played...Saint Martin's is 0-5-0 with its last three losses by a one-goal deficit...WWU went 1-1-0 against Saint Martin's with the home team winning each time...WWU and Seattle Pacific tied both matchups last year.
  • Offensive Opportunities - The Vikings lead all GNAC teams and rank 14th nationally with 91 shots (18.20 /game) along with a GNAC-leading 38 corner kicks...WWU led the GNAC and ranked 16th nationally in 2016 with 331 shots (17.42/game) along with ranking 2nd among GNAC corner kick leaders with 114 (6.00/game).

  • Saint Martin's → WWU leads all-time series 14-5-1...Saint won both meetings in 2015 to snap a three-game WWU win streak in the series before the teams split the season series in 2016.
  • Seattle Pacific → SPU leads all-time series 47-14-9, tied 1-1 in Seattle last year and tied 3-3 in Bellingham...each team finished the last meeting in Bellingham with 9 players on the field due to four red cards.

2016 SEASON IN REVIEW...the Vikings earned program's first-ever berth into the NCAA Division II Tournament as the No. 6 seed in the West Region...also earned the program's first-ever NCAA Division II Tournament win with a 3-2 (OT) victory against third-seeded Dixie State in the opening round...fell 2-0 to second-seeded UC San Diego in the second round of the NCAA Tournament...finished in a tie for 2nd in the GNAC with a 10-5-4 overall record 6-3-3 record in GNAC play...concluded the season with a 7-1-1 record at Harrington Field and a 2-4-3 record on the road...1-0-0 neutral site record...also tied 4 times to tie the school record for ties in a season.

GNAC COACHES POLL...WWU enters the season picked to finish 2nd by the GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll...finished tied for 2nd last season to post the program's highest GNAC finish since 2009.
