WHAT’S HAPPENING…the Western Washington University men’s soccer team (3-2-2, 2-0-0 GNAC) plays one game during the week, traveling to face Concordia (2-4-1, 1-1-0) on Saturday evening at Tuominen Yard in Portland, Ore….Vikings went 2-0-0 last week, beginning the conference schedule with wins over Saint Martin’s at home (3-2) and at Seattle Pacific (3-2, OT).

GNAC/RED LION TEAM OF THE WEEK…WWU was selected as GNAC/Red Lion Team of the Week following the opening week of conference play…Vikings were one of two teams at 2-0-0 in conference play after the first week of conference action…one conference team amongst all conference sports is chosen as the GNAC/Red Lion Team of the Week at the end of each week.

LAST WEEK…the Vikings opened the GNAC schedule at home against Saint Martin’s on Sept. 21, building a three-goal advantage before holding off a late surge by the Saints for a 3-2 victory…WWU came from behind on Sept. 23 at Seattle Pacific, responding from early goals by the Falcons with a goal in the 74th minute before tying the game in the 87th minute to force overtime…Stephen Jinneman scored with a header in the 93rd minute during overtime for the golden goal victory off an assist from Garrett Strawn.

NOT OVER UNTIL OVERTIME…the Vikings have been to overtime in five of seven games in 2017…played seven games that went to overtime during the 2016 campaign, including a stretch of four consecutive games that went to overtime as part of five overtime games within a six-game span during last season…went 2-1-4 in overtime games last year, tying the school record for ties in a season…WWU is 1-2-2 in overtime games during 2017.

FARNSWORTH HONOREDDrew Farnsworth was named the GNAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday…Farnsworth scored twice during the week with a goal in each game…netted his first collegiate goal in the 60th minute for a 2-0 lead against Saint Martin’s and had the equalizing goal during the 87th minute to help force overtime at Seattle Pacific.

CONSISTENT CONTRIBUTORS...Anthony Dean has recorded a goal or assist in each game during 2017…leads GNAC in points (15) and is tied for the conference lead in goals (6)…has at least 1 goal in five of seven games…has recorded an assist in three of seven games…Christian Rotter ranks 2nd on the team with a goal and 3 assists (5 points)….four players have scored 2 or more goals (Dean, Luke Olney, Georg Cholewa and Drew Farnsworth)…seven players total have scored a goal for the Vikings in 2017.

HOME SWEET HOME...WWU has played four home games during 2017 and following Saturday’s game at Concordia return to Harrington Field for four consecutive home games…Vikings went 7-1-1 at Harrington Field in 2016 and are 1-2-1 at home in 2017.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

To the Tournament – WWU earned the program’s first-ever NCAA II Tournament berth in 2016, advancing to the second round of the tournament.

GNAC Preseason Poll – The Vikings were picked to place 2nd by the 2017 GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll.

The Opponent – Concordia (2-4-1, 1-1-0) is coming off its biggest win of the season, topping No. 2-ranked and previously-unbeaten Simon Fraser 3-2 on Thursday night at Tuominen Yard…Cavaliers were picked to place 7th in the conference by the GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll and are 1-3-1 in their last 5 games.

Offensive Opportunities – The Vikings rank 2nd in the GNAC and 18th nationally in shots per game (17.43) and have generated 122 total shots…also lead GNAC with 55 corner kicks (7.86/game)…WWU led GNAC and ranked 16th nationally in 2016 with 331 shots (17.42/game), also ranked 2nd among GNAC corner kick leaders with 114 (6.00/game).

Unbeaten Streak – WWU is unbeaten in its last five games…tied Colorado Christian before topping MSU Denver…tied Fort Hays State before posting consecutive wins against Saint Martin’s and Seattle Pacific. 

Coach Brisbon – WWU head coach Greg Brisbon is in his 5th season as head coach of the WWU men’s soccer program…directed the Vikings to a 38-29-13 record as head coach…spent previous 12 years as the Vikings assistant coach, eight as the associate head coach…led the Vikings to their first NCAA II Tournament appearance and first postseason victory in 2016 with a 10-5-4 record...named GNAC co-Coach of the Year in 2016.

Concordia → WWU leads all-time series 6-5-1…Vikings won both matchups last season, topping the Cavaliers 2-1 in overtime at home with a golden goal from Anthony Dean before scoring four second-half goals en route to a 5-1 victory when the teams played in Oregon last season.

2016 SEASON IN REVIEW…the Vikings earned program’s first-ever berth into the NCAA Division II Tournament as the No. 6 seed in the West Region…also earned the program’s first-ever NCAA Division II Tournament win with a 3-2 (OT) victory against third-seeded Dixie State in the opening round…fell 2-0 to second-seeded UC San Diego in the second round of the NCAA Tournament…finished in a tie for 2nd in the GNAC with a 10-5-4 overall record 6-3-3 record in GNAC play…concluded the season with a 7-1-1 record at Harrington Field and a 2-4-3 record on the road...1-0-0 neutral site record…also tied 4 times to tie the school record for ties in a season.

GNAC COACHES POLL…WWU enters the season picked to finish 2nd by the GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll…finished tied for 2nd last season to post the program’s highest GNAC finish since 2009.
