WHAT’S HAPPENING…the Western Washington University men’s soccer team (6-4-3, 5-2-1 GNAC) is on the road for a pair of games this week, facing Northwest Nazarene on Thursday and Montana State Billings on Saturday…Vikings are tied for 2nd in the GNAC standings with four conference games remaining on the schedule.]

LAST WEEK
…the Vikings played one game last week, falling 3-2 at Saint Martin’s during a Thursday afternoon contest…Anthony Dean scored via a penalty kick in the 28th minute to put WWU ahead 1-0, while Luke Olney scored a game-tying goal in the 75th minute with an assist from Georg Cholewa before the Saints went ahead, 3-2, in the 78th minute.

GNAC STANDINGS... WWU (5-2-1 GNAC) is tied for 2nd in the GNAC with 16 points behind No. 9 Simon Fraser (19 points, 6-1-1 GNAC)…Seattle Pacific (16 points, 5-3-1 GNAC) is also tied with the Vikings...following this week, WWU concludes the GNAC schedule traveling to Simon Fraser (Nov. 2) and hosting Concordia on Nov. 4 next week…Vikings finished tied for 2nd in the GNAC during 2016 with a 6-3-3 conference record.

ON THE ROAD...After playing eight of their first 12 games at Harrington Field, the Vikings are playing twice away from Bellingham this week as part of a stretch of four consecutive road games…WWU has a 3-1-1 record on the road...Vikings are 5-2-2 in their last nine games away from Bellingham (true road games and neutral-site games combined) since Oct. 15 of last season.

NOT OVER UNTIL OVERTIME…the Vikings have been to overtime in seven of 13 games during 2017 with five of those contests reaching double overtime…1-3-3 record in overtime games during season…also played seven games that went to overtime during the 2016 campaign…seven overtime games in a season during the 2016 and 2017 seasons are tied for the most in a single season for WWU since at least 2000….went 2-1-4 in overtime games last year, tying the school record for ties in a season.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Opponents – The Vikings battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie against Northwest Nazarene (6-6-1, 3-4-1 GNAC) in the first meeting between the teams on Oct. 7 in Bellingham…WWU defeated Montana State Billings (6-9-0, 4-5-0 GNAC), 2-0, on Oct. 12 in Bellingham with goals from Drew Farnsworth (81’) and Anthony Dean (90’) off an assist from Farnsworth.
  • Impressive Stretch – The Vikings are 10-2-2 over their last 14 GNAC games dating back to last season …won nine consecutive conference games from Oct. 20 of last season through Oct. 5 of current season….had a 12-game GNAC unbeaten streak ended against Simon Fraser on Oct. 14.
  • Narrow Defeats – All four losses for WWU during the season have been by a deficit of one goal…three losses via overtime golden goals…two of the three overtime losses have ended in double overtime with fewer than two minutes remaining in the period.
  • Balanced Attack – Eight players have scored a goal for WWU in 2017…four players have at least 3 goals…Anthony Dean is tied for 2nd in the GNAC with 10 goals…Stephen Jinneman, Drew Farnsworth and Luke Olney have each scored 3 goals to rank tied for 2nd on the team.
  • Offensive Opportunities – The Vikings rank 2nd in the GNAC and 34th nationally in shots per game (15.77) with 205 total shots…rank 2nd in GNAC and 56th nationally with 5.54 corner kicks per game average (72 total)…Anthony Dean ranks 9th nationally with a 4.54 shots per game average as well as tied for 16th with a 2.08 shots on goal per game average.
  • To the Tournament – WWU earned the program’s first-ever NCAA II Tournament berth in 2016, advancing to the second round of the tournament.
  • GNAC Preseason Poll – The Vikings were picked to place 2nd by the 2017 GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Coach Brisbon – WWU head coach Greg Brisbon is in his 5th season as head coach of the WWU men’s soccer program…directed the Vikings to a 41-31-14 record as head coach…spent previous 12 years as the Vikings assistant coach, eight as the associate head coach…led the Vikings to their first NCAA II Tournament appearance and first postseason victory in 2016 with a 10-5-4 record...named GNAC co-Coach of the Year in 2016.

SERIES HISTORY…here is a look at the all-time series history between WWU its opponents:

  • Northwest Nazarene → WWU leads the all-time series 15-6-2…home team won each game the team’s played last year…teams played to a 0-0 double overtime tie in Bellingham earlier this season…last contest in Nampa between the teams on Oct. 8 of last season went to double overtime with Northwest Nazarene winning, 1-0.
  • Montana State Billings → WWU leads the all-time series 18-9-1…the teams split the season series last year with the home team winning each matchup…Vikings won, 2-0, in the first 2017 meeting between the teams…Montana State Billings won the last meeting in Billings, 3-1, on Oct. 13 of last season.

STRONG START…WWU opened the conference schedule 5-0-1 and had a nine-game unbeaten streak ended Oct. 14 against Simon Fraser...the six-game unbeaten start to the conference schedule was tied with a 3-0-3 start to the GNAC schedule in 2013 for longest unbeaten streak to start conference play by WWU since at least 2000…WWU also won its first four conference games in 2017, the best winning streak start to a conference schedule since WWU went 4-0-0 in conference play during a four-game conference schedule in 2002.

DEAN’S POINTS...Anthony Dean recorded a goal or assist during each of the first eight games of 2017…tied former Viking Paul Nissley (2002) for most consecutive games with a point recorded in program history (since year 2000)…Dean ranks in a tie for 2nd in the GNAC with 23 points and is also tied for 2nd in the GNAC with 10 goals…has a goal in eight games­ with two multi-goal games…has recorded a point in 10 of 13 games…ranks tied for 44th nationally in total points…ranks in a tie for 37th nationally in total goals as well as tied for 28th in goals per game average (.77) and tied for 31st in points per game average (1.77)…ranks 9th in shots per game (4.54) and tied for 16th in shots on goal per game (2.08).

VISTEN HONORED...Tyler Visten was named the GNAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 9 after posting consecutive shutouts and leading the conference with 9 saves during the week…Visten has 13 career shutouts to rank in a tie for 3rd in program history in the category…for the season, he ranks 2nd in the GNAC with a 1.41 goals-against average.

GNAC/RED LION TEAM OF THE WEEK…WWU was selected as GNAC/Red Lion Team of the Week following the opening week of conference play on Sept. 25…Vikings were one of two teams at 2-0-0 in conference play after the first week of conference action…one conference team amongst all conference sports is chosen as the GNAC/Red Lion Team of the Week at the end of each week.

FARNSWORTH HONOREDDrew Farnsworth was named the GNAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 25…scored twice during the week with a goal in each game…netted his first collegiate goal in the 60th minute for a 2-0 lead against Saint Martin’s and had the equalizing goal during the 87th minute to help force overtime at Seattle Pacific.

QUICK FACTS…WWU went 10-5-4 overall in 2016 and 6-3-3 in the GNAC…returns 10 starters and 18 letter winners from­­­ last year’s squad…will be replacing two starters…returns NSCAA 2016 All-West Region Third Team honorees Anthony Dean and Tyler Visten, both All-GNAC Second Team selections as well…also returns First Team All-GNAC choice Luke Olney and honorable mention pick Jeremiah Lee...2017 squad features seven seniors, five juniors, seven sophomores and nine freshmen.

2016 SEASON IN REVIEW…the Vikings earned program’s first-ever berth into the NCAA Division II Tournament as the No. 6 seed in the West Region…also earned the program’s first-ever NCAA Division II Tournament win with a 3-2 (OT) victory against third-seeded Dixie State in the opening round…fell 2-0 to second-seeded UC San Diego in the second round of the NCAA Tournament…finished in a tie for 2nd in the GNAC with a 10-5-4 overall record 6-3-3 record in GNAC play…concluded the season with a 7-1-1 record at Harrington Field and a 2-4-3 record on the road...1-0-0 neutral site record…also tied 4 times to tie the school record for ties in a season.

GNAC COACHES POLL…WWU entered the season picked to finish 2nd by the GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll…finished tied for 2nd last season to post the program’s highest GNAC finish since 2009…defending conference champion Simon Fraser was picked to repeat at conference champion, receiving all seven first-place votes…MSU Billings (3rd), Northwest Nazarene (4th), Seattle Pacific (5th), Saint Martin’s (6th) and Concordia (7th) followed the Vikings in the preseason poll.
