WHAT’S HAPPENING…the Western Washington University men’s soccer team (7-4-4, 4-3-3 GNAC) hosts No. 3 Simon Fraser Thursday evening for Senior Night in its final home match before closing out the GNAC schedule on Saturday at Concordia…the Vikings will play their fourth consecutive home contest on Thursday and are yet to allow a goal during the homestand with three straight shutout victories…Western Washington faces both Simon Fraser and Concordia for the second time this season after playing each team earlier in the conference schedule.

LAST WEEK...Western Washington earned a pair of 2-0 victories against Northwest Nazarene and Montana State Billings at Harrington Field…second-half goals lifted the Vikings to victory in each match…freshman forward Christian Rotter gave the Vikings a lead with a goal in the 70th minute last Thursday against Northwest Nazarene and junior forward Anthony Dean added a second goal in the 84th minute…against MSU Billings last Saturday senior midfielder Eleazar Galvan scored in the 81st minute to break a scoreless tie and Dean added a second goal just over five minutes later in the 86th minute for a 2-0 win.

GALVAN HONORED…senior midfielder Eleazar Galvan was chosen as the GNAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for October 24 to October 30 after assisting two goals and scoring once over two matches last week…Galvan has posted 2 goals and 3 assists over his last 5 matches…the award was the first of his career and Galvan became the first Viking to earn the offensive award this season…junior goalkeeper Tyler Visten and senior defender Brady Ulen have each been recognized with GNAC Defensive Player of the Week honors earlier this season.

SENIOR NIGHT…Western Washington will honor its four seniors with a short pre-game ceremony prior to Thursday’s match against Simon Fraser…seniors Conner Pichette, Eleazar Galvan, Brady Ulen and Andrew Wildfong will be honored.

SHUTOUT STREAK…Western Washington has recorded three straight shutout victories and has not allowed a goal since the 62nd minute of an eventual 1-1 overtime tie at Simon Fraser on Oct. 15…current time of shutout streak is at 318:04 since a goal was last allowed.

NOT IN THE NET… Vikings have recorded 7 shutouts in 2016 to rank in a tie for 25th among NCAA II teams…Vikings are also 27th in NCAA II with a .47 shutout percentage and 28th with a .87 goals-against average…Vikings are second behind Simon Fraser for the conference lead in shutouts…Western Washington has allowed more than 2 goals in a game just twice this season.

DOMINANT DEFENSE…Western Washington ranks second in the GNAC with a .87 goals-against average …Western Washington junior goalkeeper Tyler Visten ranks second in the conference with a .87 goals-against average, which ranks 33rd in NCAA II, and third in the GNAC with a .778 save percentage…Visten is also second among conference leaders with 6 shutouts and fourth with 49 saves.

SECOND-HALF SURGE...the last 5 goals scored by Western Washington have come in the second half…13 of the 23 goals scored by Western Washington have come during the second half this season.

GOOD GOAL NUMBERS…the Vikings have allowed only 14 goals this season with two games left on the schedule after allowing 31 goals last season…offensively the Vikings have already scored 23 goals this season after totaling 22 goals during the 2015 season.

NOT OVER UNTIL OVERTIME...six of the 15 games for the Vikings in 2016 have reached overtime, including five of the last nine…each match beyond 90 minutes for the Vikings has reached double overtime…WWU is 1-1-4 in overtime matches this season.

TYING THE TIE RECORD...the Vikings’ 4 ties during the 2016 season equals the school record for ties in the season…the 1974 Vikings also tied 4 times.

PUTTING THE PRESSURE ON...Western Washington leads the GNAC in corner kick opportunities with 98…the Vikings are averaging 6.53 corner kicks per contest…Western Washington has also taken 270 shots (18.00 shots per game) this season, a total ranking second and an average ranking first in the GNAC…the shot average for Western Washington ranks 11th nationally.

SOLID START…the Vikings 3-1-1 record through non-conference play to open the season was the best five-game start to a season since 2010 when Western Washington was also 3-1-1 after five games…Vikings began the season 2-1-0 at home and 1-0-1 on the road during the non-conference season.

ALL-ACADEMIC HONOREES...Western Washington had four players honored for their commitment in the classroom by being named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Team on Oct. 21...junior defender Stephen Jinneman, junior midfielder Luke Olney, sophomore forward Jose Castillo and sophomore defender Garrett Strawn were each recognized.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT…junior forward Anthony Dean, a transfer from Bellevue College, leads Western Washington this season with 8 goals and 4 assists…he ranks fifth in the GNAC with 20 points…Dean has posted two multi-goal games in which he also assisted a goal, accomplishing the feat against Colorado Christian (Sept. 10) and Saint Martin’s (Oct. 20)….he has scored 4 goals over his last three games.  

BALANCED ATTACK…seven players for the Vikings have scored multiple goals on the season…junior forward Anthony Dean leads Western Washington with 8 goals and senior midfielder Eleazar Galvan has scored 3 goals…senior defender Brady Ulen, junior midfielder Luke Olney, freshman midfielder Jeremiah Lee, freshman forward Christian Rotter and junior forward Drew Barker have each scored twice…in all, nine players have scored at least 1 goal this season out of the Vikings 23 total goals scored.

SIMON FRASER [Website | Roster | Schedule]…The all-time series between Simon Fraser and Western Washington is 37-15-7 in favor of the Clan…the Clan have already won the GNAC men’s soccer title...the Vikings are one of two teams to tie the unbeaten and No. 3-ranked Simon Fraser this season, battling to a 1-1 overtime tie in Burnaby earlier this season…Simon Fraser enters Thursday’s match 13-0-2, including an 8-0-2 record in conference play…goalkeeper Brandon Watson recently broke the GNAC career shutout record and currently has 30 career shutouts…the Clan are unbeaten in their last 21 matches and have posted three straight shutout wins since tying Western Washington…Mamadi Camara (9 goals, 6 assists), Adam Jones (7 goals, 9 assists) and Ryan Dhillon (4 goals, 7 assists) help lead the offense. 

CONCORDIA [Website | Roster | Schedule]…The all-time series between Concordia and Western Washington is 5-5-1…the Vikings topped Concordia earlier this season at Harrington Field with a 2-1 overtime win…Concordia is 4-9-2 overall and 1-8-1 in GNAC play…the Cavaliers will oppose Northwest Nazarene on Thursday before facing the Vikings…Concordia will look to snap a six-match losing streak this week…Matt Pain (8 goals, 2 assists) and Erick Urzua (6 goals, 3 assists) help lead the Cavaliers offensively.

YOUNG TEAM…the Vikings roster of 29 players features four seniors, 10 juniors, four sophomores and 11 freshmen…12 players return from the 2015 squad but 13 have departed and four have joined the program as transfers in 2016.

QUICK FACTS…went 5-10-3 overall in 2015 and 3-9-2 in the GNAC…returned five starters and 13 letterwinners from last year’s squad…replaced six starters, including 2015 GNAC 2nd-team selection and top goal scorer Adam Talley (8 goals, 2 assists)…returned 2015 honorable mention All-GNAC picks Luke Olney, Eleazar Galvan and Tyler Visten...2016 squad features crop of young talent with 12 newcomers, three redshirts, nine players with one year of varsity experience, four players with two years of experience, and one player with three years of experience.

THE PRESEASON…the Vikings posted a 2-0-0 record during the preseason…defeated Fraser Valley at Harrington Field (2-0) with first-half goals from senior forward Eleazar Galvan and junior midfielder Wesley Stark…closed the exhibition schedule with a 3-1 win over visiting Puget Sound…Galvan, junior midfielder Luke Olney and junior forward Anthony Dean tallied goals in the first half against the Loggers…Olney was credited with the game-winning goal against Puget Sound, the team coached by his father Reece Olney for the past 23 years.

THE NON-CONFERENCE…Western Washington began the season with two games in California, topping Chico State, 1-0, with a goal in the 83rd minute from junior forward Anthony Dean before battling to a 0-0 tie after two overtime periods against Sonoma State…the Vikings fells 2-1 to MSU Denver in their home opener before firing 39 shots (16 on goal) en route to a 4-0 over visiting Colorado Christian…Western Washington closed out the non-conference schedule with a 1-0 win over nationally-ranked Fort Hays State, allowing only 1 shot on goal from FHSU in the match…freshman midfielder Jeremiah Lee netted the game-winning goal in the 24th minute for the Vikings.

A LOOK AT THE GNAC…SFU, ranked No. 3 nationally, is the only GNAC team without a loss this season…Western Washington is currently in fourth place…five teams have tied at least twice in GNAC play…each of the seven schools that sponsor men’s soccer will play 12 conference matches.
