BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University men's soccer senior defender Brady Ulen has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for October 31 to November 6.
Ulen (Coeur d'Alene, ID/Post Falls/North Idaho) has helped the Vikings to a 5-0-1 finish to the GNAC schedule, including wins over No. 3 Simon Fraser (1-0) and Concordia (5-1) during the last week.
Ulen and the Vikings recorded their eighth shutout of the season against Simon Fraser last Thursday, becoming the first team to shut out the Clan this year and hand the GNAC champions their first loss of the season. Against Concordia, Ulen scored his third goal of the season by converting a penalty kick in the 69th minute for a 4-1 lead and defensively helped Western Washington to allow just 5 total shots by the Cavaliers. He played all but 5 minutes against Simon Fraser and played the entire game against Concordia.
The GNAC Player of the Week award was the second of the season for Ulen, who also earned the honor on September 19. He is joined by senior midfielder Eleazar Galvan (Chelan, WA/Skagit Valley College) and junior goalkeeper Tyler Visten (Mount Vernon, WA/Skagit Valley College) as recipients of a GNAC Player of the Week award this season. Galvan was the GNAC Offensive Player of the Week last week (October 31) while Visten was the GNAC Defensive Player of the Week on September 6.
Over the 5-0-1 finish to the conference schedule, including a five-game win streak, the Vikings have scored 14 goals while limiting opponents to just 2 goals during the span.
The Vikings (9-4-4, 6-3-3 GNAC) have concluded their regular-season schedule but will await the NCAA Division II Selection Show at 3:30 pm PT Monday afternoon to see if they will receive a berth to the national tournament.
