FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Center Sarah Hill (Sr., Richmond, VA/Lloyd C. Bird) had a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds and guard Katie Colard (Jr., McCleary/Elma) added a game-high 20 points on 6-of-9 3-point shooting as Western Washington University defeated University of Alaska Fairbanks, 91-65, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game Thursday at Patty Center on the UAF campus.
The Vikings, who had six players score double figures, improved to 16-8 overall and took over sole possession of second place in the conference at 12-4 as Simon Fraser fell 87-71 at Alaska Anchorage.
WWU has now won five straight games and 11 of their last 13.
UAF fell to 9-14 overall and 3-12 in GNAC action. The Nanooks, who have won just three of their last 16 games after a 6-1 start, were led by Kailee Skjold with team highs of 19 points and eight rebounds.
WWU broke the game open during the early stages of the second half with a 17-3 run over a five-minute stretch for a 60-40 lead with 12:38 remaining.
UAF never got closer than 18 after that and the Vikings' biggest lead was 28 points. Taylor Peacocke (Fr., Kenmore/Inglemoor) scored 13 points for WWU, Sydney Donaldson (Jr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) had12, Tia Briggs (Fr., Tacoma/Wilson) 11 and Jenni White (Jr., Spokane/East Valley) 10.
The Vikings shot 53.1 percent (34-of-64) from the field, hitting 9-of-13 3-pointers for a season-high 69.2 percent. The nine makes tied their season best.
UAF entered the game ranked sixth nationally in 3-point defense at 24.9.
WWU led 16-5 just over four minutes into the contest and held a 40-31 lead at halftime.
Colard had 11 points in the first period and Hill 12 in the second.
WWU has now won 42 of the 47 series meetings with UAF, taking the last 12 decisions.
WWU is at Alaska Anchorage on Saturday (6:15 p.m. PT) for a GNAC counter.
