BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Center Britt Harris (Sr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) led a balanced attack with 14 points on 7-of-9 field-goal shooting as nationally ranked Western Washington University defeated Carroll College MT, 79-52, in first-day action at the Lynda Goodrich Women's Basketball Classic on Friday at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.
Five players scored in double figures for the Vikings, ranked No.9 in this week's USA Today Sports/ESPN Division II Top 25 Poll, who improved to 3-0.
Carroll fell to 2-2. Forwards Torrie Cahill and Megan Patterson each had 19 points for the Fighting Saints, who shot 40.4 percent (21-of-52) from the field overall, but were 7-of-14 (50 percent) on 3-pointers.
Guard Corinn Waltrip (Sr., Tigard, OR) had 13 points for the Vikings, who shot 62.5 percent (35-of-56) from the field, including 54.5 percent (6-of-11) on 3-pointers. Guard Trishi Williams (Sr., Mabton) had 12 points, Jenni White (So., Spokane/East Valley) 11, and Sarah Hill (Jr., Richmond, VA/Lloyd C. Bird) 10.
White also has six assists.
WWU led by just one, 13-12, just over eight minutes into the game, but then went on a 16-4 run to take a 29-16 lead with 6:55 left in the first half.
The Vikings led 43-30 at halftime and the margin remained in double figures throughout the second half.
WWU had a 31-22 rebound advantage with forward Erika Ramstead (Sr., Everson/Nooksack Valley) pulling down a game-high 12. She also scored nine points and had three assists.
The Vikings have won their last nine games in Goodrich Classic, and have won 28 of 31 overall, tying or winning 13 of the previous 15 tourney titles.
It was the 449th career victory for WWU coach Carmen Dolfo, who is in her 22nd season and has an overall record of 449-169.
Dolfo goes for No.450 when the Vikings play Evergreen on Saturday (7:30 p.m.) in the tourney finale. Carroll faces Saint Martin's at 12 noon.
