Women's Hoops Opens Exhibition Play Sunday

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women’s basketball team officially opens the preseason this Sunday with an exhibition game vs. Trinity Western on WECU Court at Carver Gym.
The game will tip-off at 12:30 pm on the WWU campus with free admission for all fans. Free parking and shuttle service to Carver Gym is also available from the 12A and C lots on the south side of campus.
“We are a very young group that is working hard to get better with each practice, and it will be good to get experience in a real game situation,” said head coach Carmen Dolfo, who enters her 27th season leading the program. “We are battling through some sickness and injuries, but this will be a good test to see where we are at and what we need to work on.”
WWU will also host Corban in an exhibition game at Carver Gym on Nov. 5 (12 pm) before opening the regular season Nov. 10-11 at the West Region Crossover Classic in Fresno, Calif. The Vikings will play Fresno Pacific (Nov. 10, 7:30 pm) to begin the regular season and will also face Humboldt State (Nov. 11, 5:30 pm) at the tournament.
Following the West Region Crossover Classic in Fresno, Calif., the Vikings will play at a second West Region Crossover Classic in Azusa, Calif., on Nov. 17-18. WWU opposes UC San Diego (Nov. 17, 5:30 pm) and Azusa Pacific (Nov. 18, 7:30 pm) during the trip.
The Vikings first official games on WECU Court at Carver Gym will be in the annual Lynda Goodrich Classic Nov. 24-25 hosting Valdosta State, Academy of Art and Saint Martin’s for the two-day tournament. WWU takes on Valdosta State (5 pm) on Nov. 24 before playing Academy of Art at 7:30 pm on Nov. 25.  
The Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule begins for WWU with a home game against Simon Fraser on Nov. 28 (7 pm) and is followed immediately by a trip to Montana State­ Billings for a game on Nov. 30 (7 pm MT).
WWU lost six seniors from last year’s team that went 26-6, finished 2nd in the GNAC and advanced to the NCAA II West Regional Semifinal. The Vikings return five letterwinners and one starter from the 2016-17 squad.
The 2017-18 Vikings welcome an incoming class of three transfers and two freshmen. Sophomore guard Dani Iwami (Seal Beach, CA/Hawai’i Pacific), sophomore forward Anna Schwecke (Evergreen, CO/Colorado-Colorado Springs) and junior guard Bobbi Westendorf (Auburn, WA/Tacoma CC) compose the class of transfers while WWU also welcomes incoming freshman forward/center Kelsey Rogers (Bothell, WA/Lynnwood) and freshman guard Emma Duff (Tumwater, WA/Black Hills).
