BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The 31st Annual Western Washington University Viking Jam, featuring the WWU men's and women's basketball teams in a high-energy evening of contests and scrimmages, is set to take place at 7 pm next Wednesday, Oct. 25, on WECU Court in Carver Gym.
The event has free admission and fans are invited to enjoy an entertaining evening full of games, contests and fan interaction. Free parking and shuttle service to Carver Gym from the 12A and C lots on the south side of campus will be available. Doors open with the start of the pre-party festivities at 6 pm followed by the main event set to get underway at 7 pm.
During the pre-party festivities there will be free food, music and player autograph signings. The Viking Jam main event features player introductions, scrimmages, a slam-dunk contest and three-point shooting contest with the WWU basketball teams.
The WWU band will play during the evening and there will performances by the WWU Hip Hop Dance and WWU Cheer teams, as well as a dance contest and prize giveaways among other features.
WWU returns to the on-campus Carver Gym facility for the upcoming year with all home games on WECU Court during 2017-18. The Vikings are back in their home facility following a two-year hiatus playing games at Whatcom Pavilion on the campus of Whatcom Community College while Carver underwent a remodel.
Both WWU basketball programs will play once prior to Viking Jam, with the men hosting the annual Blue-White Scrimmage on Saturday night (Oct. 21, 5 pm) and the women hosting Trinity Western for an exhibition on Sunday (Oct. 22, 12:30 pm).
Following Viking Jam, the WWU men also host Quest for an exhibition on Nov. 1 (7 pm) before officially beginning the regular season on Nov. 10 against Notre Dame de Namur (7:30 pm) in the PacWest/GNAC Conference Challenge hosted by the Vikings in Bellingham. The following evening on Nov. 11, WWU faces Hawai'i Hilo at 7:30 pm in the tournament for the second of eight straight home games that begin the 2017-18 regular season for the Vikings.
The opening slate of home games also features a contest against Douglas on Nov. 15 (7 pm) before a pair of games in the Chuck Randall Classic against UC San Diego (Nov. 24, 7:30 pm) and Capilano (Nov. 25, 5 pm). The Vikings open GNAC play at home against Concordia (Nov. 30, 7 pm) and Western Oregon (Dec. 2, 7 pm) before hosting Cal State East Bay on Dec. 12 (7 pm) to complete the opening stretch of home games.
The WWU women will host Corban in an exhibition game following Viking Jam on Nov. 5 (12 pm) before starting the regular season schedule Nov. 10-11 at the West Region Crossover Classic in Fresno, Calif. The Vikings will play Fresno Pacific (Nov. 10, 7:30 pm) to begin the regular season and will also face Humboldt State (Nov. 11, 5:30 pm) at the tournament.
Following another trip to California for a second West Region Crossover Classic in Azusa, Calif., with games against UC San Diego (Nov. 17, 5:30 pm) and Azusa Pacific (Nov. 18, 7:30 pm), WWU will play its first official home games during the annual Lynda Goodrich Classic against Valdosta State (Nov. 24, 5 pm) and Academy of Art (Nov. 25, 7:30 pm). The conference schedule starts for the Vikings with a home game against Simon Fraser (Nov. 28, 7 pm) before heading to MSU Billings for a game on Nov. 30 (7 pm MT).
