Rowing Checks in at No. 3 in Preseason Rankings

March 17, 2017

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Washington University women's rowing team is ranked No. 3 in the 2017 USRowing/CRCA Division II Preseason Poll.

The Vikings are coming off a 3rd-place finish in last year's NCAA Championships and have advanced to the NCAA Championship in 15 of the last 16 seasons. Two-time defending national champion Barry University (FL) is ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll, followed by 2016 runner-up Central Oklahoma. WWU won an unprecedented seven consecutive national championships from 2005-2011.

"We have a strong returning group this year as well as a feisty bunch of newcomers," said head coach John Fuchs, who is in his 19th season leading the program. "The upcoming competitive schedule will test us for sure. We are seeing good habits and results every day. Should be a fun year!"

WWU opened the season last weekend at the PLU Invitational, sweeping all six of its races in convincing fashion in the Varsity 8, 2V8 and 3V8 classifications. The Vikings will return to competition April 1-2 at the San Diego Crew Classic, racing against top-level competition on Mission Bay.
